MERRILLVILLE -- Letters were sent home with more than 4,000 students from three schools Wednesday as officials attempted to further explain what they describe as a recommendation that students not wear pink clothes.
While much of the letter refutes newspaper and television reports that have labeled the action as a ban, administrators have admitted furnishing alternative clothes to some students who showed up for class wearing pink.
In Wednesday's letter, Superintendent Tony Lux said officials chose to address the issue proactively because they do not want groups of students trying to distinguish themselves from others with one of the year's hottest fashion colors. Individual students are not prohibited from wearing pink, he said.
An announcement aimed at discouraging students from wearing pink was made Friday via an intercom at Merrillville High School. No formal announcements were made at Pierce Middle School or Merrillville Intermediate School, but officials there also are cracking down on pink clothing.
The issue surfaced, Lux wrote in the letter to parents, when a few students, mostly boys, began to wear pink clothing around some of the schools.
