Phrase origins?
How long have the phrases "bleeding out" and "good to go" been in the American lexicon? I first heard the former in TV hospital dramas, and my first exposure to the latter was, IIRC, in Tone Loc's Funky Cold Medina. Shows how cultured I am.

The reason I ask is that I'm reading a period piece set during the Great Depression, and these two phrases really seemed out of place when they appeared in dialogue. I had a suspicion that they might be anachronistic, but I wasn't sure.

The author also used another phrase but I can't recall it right now. Same problem, though--it seemed off from the overall time/tone of the novel.

Thanks for your insights.

1. My information on "good to go" comes from movies.
It's related to space travel, supposedly. It was used in both "The Right Stuff" and "Contact."

Google your phrase/word with "etymology" and you MAY find info.

I couldn't find "bleeding out" other than standard medical dictionaries (though
if you look in them, they MAY have some historical reference, and "good to go" --
I only found "attested to 1989" without documentation or explanationi of any
kind: http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=good

4. Anachronistic?
You mean like the time on The Tudors when Anne Boelyn said "Okay"? Knocked me for a loop as effectively as if I had been body-checked by a hockey player. In my living room.

Sorry I don't know the origins of the phrases you mentioned. "Bleeding out" feels like it came from the military but I couldn't prove it.

7. Both are from Ukbar the cave man.
He said it's good to go outside but all that is remembered is good to go because the bear came back bashed him in the skull and he was bleeding out the wazoo. He died writing good to go on the wall.
