What are the best Greyhound Bus Stations?
Edited on Fri Apr-02-04 01:54 AM by Champ
Assuming atleast a couple of people have ridden these am I right? As far as I can tell, most greyhound bus stations suck. The only things I like are the snack stops at corner stores and McDonalds, I have ridden the Bus from Phoenix to Denver lots of times and they stop at those places. My favorite stop is a Pancake Restuarant in Houck, Arizona. The food there is great, well I just slid off topic. I guess the Phoenix Bus Station is the nicest I've been to, but that is not saying alot.

1. NYC is pretty good.

It's on 8th and 48th. In the station there is food and a newstand. Outside, it is near Times Square. There are about 4 peep shows (some live) within 2 blocks. Drug dealers within one block. And I am sure there are plenty of hookers near by.

That makes for a fun stop in NY.

Disclaimer: I wish they would clean that stuff up some.

2. It's improved a lot in the last ten years
Seems I get there once or twice a year, and I've noticed a slowly evolving change for the better there. The bathrooms are usable and safe now, though you still might end up waiting for a dryer while a homeless guy finishes his laundry.

But, a bus terminal is never gonna be real nice. It's a bus terminal. And being a bus terminal, it caters to the types of people who tend to take buses.

6. I tend to take buses
Edited on Fri Apr-02-04 01:55 AM by Champ
I gets me from point A to point B and I ride them mainly because I don't have a car and I can't afford a plane ticket. But it's not like I am a homeless guy or anything.

9. Lots of places around NYC for which the bus is the best option
great quick ride up to Herriman State Park, or over into Jersey to a friend's house (stops just a few doors from her apartment!), etc. Buses are great for short trips, though I prefer the train when I can.

Though it seems bus prices are getting to be close to airplane prices for long trips, but I could be wrong on that. Other than short trips, though, I don't like buses - to packed in. Airplanes are packed, but at least they're fast. Trains, though - ahhh, trains have leg room, bathrooms, snack bars, etc., and plenty of room to walk around. Love 'em!

I couldn't imagine riding the bus cross country. My family like to take bus tours from WI into New England and Canada for the fall foliage, and I just can't imagine spending 7 days in a bus. Shudder. But on a tour group, maybe it's not so bad, since you get to know everyone and it's not all anonymous people like normal.

Well, that was way more information than you needed to hear, I'm sure.

:-)

Ooh, the IKEA bus is great. Forgot about that one!

And especially the bus into Herriman State Park. I use that a lot.

10. Yeah
I can't imagine going cross country in a bus either, to many stops and to many nights sleeping on the bus.(I hate trying to sleep on a bus)

7. Hmm, what are the types of people who take buses?
People who can't afford to take planes?

11. People who prefer them, I guess

But I have to say I've noticed a lot more of the just plain loony types of people on buses than I've encountered on planes or trains. I'm always struck by the average oddness level of my fellow bus passengers. Also seems to be a heightened rudeness level amongst bus passengers, with loud walkmans, smelly foods, obnoxious behavior, etc.

And I don't mean loony in a disparaging way - just in a colorful way.

12. I meant no disrespect to you at all
But I remember when I took trips on Greyhound with my grandmother because she was afraid to fly. Now that you mention it, there were always some characters on there. Usually toward the back, near the "bathroom." My qualm wasn't with you, but with what I sometimes detect as a thread of elitism here, sometimes. I'm sorry if I sounded like....

3. I gotta take a trip through that station
problem is it's too expensive for a bus ride from Phoenix, AZ to New York, New York. Plus there are alot of bus stations where drug dealers live within the block of it, but that NYC one does seem like a fun stop. Hell drug dealers are usually on the bus, lmao.

where it was. I photographed it many moons ago.

5. Dunno about the best
But the worst is easily the Greyhound station in downtown Chicago. There is nothing, and I do mean NOTHING, in or around that place. The Cleveland station is pretty bad too. I remember being in there at 3:00 in the morning and seeing cops walking around casually swinging their billy clubs in their hands. Looked like they were waiting to beat someone up.

Thinking about the best, I remember the station in I think Davenport, IA being pretty nice. It was somewhere in the Quad Cities. At least it was close to downtown and within walking distance of some decent food places. Air conditioned too, unlike Chicago.

14. I'll second that about Chicago's Greyhound station. It IS bad.
Nothing whatsoever around...and that includes restaurants or fast food places. God help you if you eat in the bus station cafeteria...ugh, to put it mildly.

13. El Paso
had a nice clean one when I was there a few years back. A bright spot in an otherwise rather ugly town. The worst.. I think Dallas. Just an all around nasty station. For food... Amarillo. I had the best greasy cheeseburger at their food place. Of course, food at Greyhound isn't that great still. I love to ride Greyhound if I have the time. Love to see the scenery while traveling and the trip is never boring.
