speaking of speakers...related question
is there some kind of device that would allow me to connect several sets of speakers (more than the common two sets) to my old stereo and control their individual volumes?

I want to have a couple of sets in the front and back yards, living room and maybe the kitchen. I would need the back yard to be able to be MUCH louder than the kitchen. Does such a device exist? Even better would be the option to use mono and just have one speaker in the kitchen - don't really need stereo in there.

This needs to be usable by a moron - don't give me amps and ohms and shit like that - I don't and CAN'T comprehend electricity.

1. I have a wireless set up for surround sound, as well as my patio. It was fairly inexpensive and easy
to install. Check Best Buy, Radio Shack or Fry's. They all stock a variety of systems.

2. can you control individual volumes?
wireless, huh? dunno - that sounds kind of new-fangled - and probably uses the building's wiring for signal? or am I way off?

I remember reading something a long time ago about plug-in speakers that use the electrical wiring of the house for the signal and I doubt if that would work in this place. How are the speakers powered? Is it a miniature radio transmitter or something else?

3. The surround sound uses the electrical wiring. The patio speakers operate on radio frequency. I can
control the volume, treble, base, and balance. The patio system is about 15 years old, the surround sound nearly 10. I've heard some really good things about Rocketfish equipment.

4. There is
Your old stereo should have "tape out" jacks on it. These always have line-level audio on them. The idea is, if you want to tape off the radio or a record or something, you need somewhere to get the signal from.

To power the speakers, go to the local pawn shop and buy an old integrated amplifier, or an old receiver. Run a cable (or get some sort of wireless connection) from the main stereo's tape out to the pawn shop integrated amp's "tuner in" or "tape in" jacks, hook the speaker outs from the pawn shop amp to the remote speakers, and you're done. Control the remote speaker volume with the volume knob on the pawn shop amp.
