A question for appliance savvy DUers
Does anybody know if there is a company that still makes gas stoves with good old gas pilot lights , especially for the oven? The last two stoves I've had have had the pilotless glowbar ignition for the oven and I'm sick of shelling out $65-75 every time one needs replaced, which seems to be all too often. I'd love it if I could change out a $8-10 thermocouple instead like we did in the good ole days

thanks :)

1. Probably not. They are probably banned, maybe on a federal
level. Why, you say? Because they waste gas. And a lot, at that.
If you don't want to replace the electric pilot, just use matches.

3. Can't use matches
If the glowbar doesn't come up to temp, the valve won't open and let the gas out. If they are going to require the use of these things then they should mandate that they last longer. I've spent close to $300 on igniters over the last couple years, and that's just parts to replace them myself. I'd hate to think what the repair bills from a repairman would have been. :wow:

2. My dear guitar man...
You might consider buying a mixed range. I think they make them.

It has the gas cooktop, with electric oven/broiler underneath.

I have electric ovens built in, but I know that's not always an option.

And my cooktop has the electronic ignition to light the burners, and in nearly 10 years, we haven't had any serious problems...

It's by Viking.

Good luck!

:hi:

4. Thanks Peggy
I'll have to take a look at one. I have an electrician friend who could probably wire it up for me :)

6. That may be the route I have to take
I'd like a new one but I'm not fighting with the glowbars anymore. As soon as the damn thing is out of warranty, poof! :(

7. you can order those glowbars for much less these days, and they are easy to install
just handle gently and DON'T touch the ceramic part

I know what you mean, though - the pilotless burners seem great (and you can still light them with a match if they die or the electricity goes out), the oven - not so much

8. Cheapest I found
Was $49 plus shipping which put it close to what I've been paying locally for them. And I sure know how to change them by now lol. I've been through the "handle with care" routine a few times and still no luck. The last one lasted all of 3 months and we are currently without an oven :(

9. You can probably find stoves with electric spark rather than glowbar ignition
