Bands that used to be great, but went commercial
Fleetwood Mac, Genesis and The Eagles all were good once....

Try and think of some others....

1. I've always thought the Eagles were a mediocre middle of the road
crap band...they haven't disappointed me.

7. Their first 2 albums were fairly good
But they definitely sold out...but then again they always were an AM radio band.

50. Kansas sold out before they got a contract
I know this because the original band broke up & the leader reformed them with different personnel but same name to get a contract.
The original band was actually not bad, influenced by Zappa and King Crimson. I heard them live when I was in high school. Some of them lived in the town I was living in at the time.

2. Selloutica the band formerly known as Metallica.
Easily the worst offenders to me. A once great Heavy Metal band sells out to the commercial radio market and become ballad writing pussies. It's quite sickening.

3. disagree completely about the eagles
i think they were remarkably consistent over their years. and they had a huge place in music history in positioning themselves at the cusp between country and rock. the more "rockin'" country musicians like garth brooks and hank williams jr. owe the eagles a big debt of gratitude for paving the way.

oh, and, don't even THINK about naming the rolling stones in this thread. they were ALWAYS sellouts.

47. The Eagles..
...never really thrilled me. I would have to say that they are the ones that owe a lot to The Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, Mike Nesmith and many others who were doing what the Eagles did well before the Eagles. But, there is room for everyone and what all listeners like to listen to.

21. Manufactured MTV product from the get go. Watch this:

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/cool/view/

Frontline show sheds some insight into how Limp Bizkit was sold to America (especially the last segment). I think they shot their wad of talent early on.

36. It is impossible for Limp Bizkit to sell out
Because they have nothing to sell. No talent, no artistic integrity.

They suck, and they were only in it for the fame and money.

54. From my understanding..
...although I never really listened to Limp Bizkit, my understanding is they were/are a manufactured band. Hence the name Limp Biz (business) Kit. Although I could be mistaken. If so, they were a seller in the first place which means they couldn't sell out.

28. Aerosmith. Absolutely. 100%. Used to be good; now they're horrible.
I never, ever thought that I would look wistfully on the days when a band was regularly strung out on horse and alcohol, but ever since Aerosmith "cleaned up its act", they have sucked harder than a Navy destroyer bilge pump. Their pre-1980 output was great; now they're just gawd-fucking-awful.

I remember getting in a 1970s fight with a classmate about who was better: Aerosmith or KISS. Aerosmith was the clear winner back then. Now I would have to honestly say that KISS has the lead. KISS has always sucked, but they know it, and they STILL don't present themselves as anything but a sucky band.

IMO just because an artist goes more mainstream doesn't mean they compromise their integrity. The Beatles' most radio-friendly songs were great. That said, I think Metallica got worse. Aerosmith got worse, but they seem to have finally realized their roots.

to the Jefferson Starship to Starship . . . :puke:

From great albums like Volunteers, Surrealistic Pillow, After Bathing at Baxters, etc. to . . . "We Built This City on Rock and Roll". Talk about going from great music to complete crap.

I can go with your other choice though. I never liked the Stones, and that's gotten me flamed here at DU. I probably deserved it.

58. REM
From '83 when, after seeing the vid for "Radio Free Europe" on then-new MTV, I saved up paper route money to buy "Murmur" up to and including "Document" in 87-88ish, every album was a revelation. Green (major label debut - hmmm...) was a piece of crap ("Stand?" Yuck!), and pretty much every album since has been maudlin, yuppie-pandering and worse than useless. "The little band that could" is no better than Sting now.
