Cindy may be alive today if she had been wearing her seatbelt
I knew this woman as I've done work for her and other members of her family.

4. I knew her to be a fast driver.
The road conditions were not good here in this area when she was killed. If she was thrown from her car, she must not have been wearing a seat belt. Small decisions such as possibly driving too fast for conditions and not wearing a seat belt ended her life and put two others in a hospital. One of whom is in serious condition.

5. So very very sorry
Yes, the seat belt is a lifesaver, for sure, and I'm so sorry that she wasn't wearing one. My son's best friend was injured in an accident last year - he and another passenger in the car, both in the back seat, endured horrible life-threatening injuries - he barely left rehab a few months ago. The 2 people in the front seat, including the driver, were wearing seat-belts and walked away from the accident.

My condolences.

6. Seatbelt laws make scientific sense
They save lives because the law of physics prove (yes, there have been experiments done) that, when you move the exact same speed as the vehicle you're driving, occupying (as a passenger), or riding. In a sudden collision, the vehicle may have stopped, but the momentum of the persons, animals, or objects occupying it continue to be propelled at top speed, catapulting anything or anybody unrestrained.

My mom told this to me when I was 10 because I refused to wear my seatbelt, long before they were mandatory. It was her rule and she knew she could get through to me only two ways: scientific explanation and/or humor. I was too smart to accept, "Because I said so" and "Do as I say, not as I do" orders.

7. I wish I'd listened to my mom.
Some of us were a little more hard headed. I became a seatbelt fan at 12 when my mom lost control of her car on a wet road and rolled it. My mom and two of my sisters were belted in and walked away from the accident with only a few minor scratches. I was unbelted and ended up with a broken arm, a broken leg, and a concussion.

For the next six weeks, as I was confined to casts, my sisters had fun and played games as usual. Whenever I got grumpy about it, my mom would simply remark, "If you'd been wearing your seat belt, you'd be out there with them right now."

I've never been in a car since, either as a driver or a passenger, without one. Unlike my mother, I also won't let my car move until everyone inside is wearing one.
