Poll question: Favorite board game
I'm setting aside checkers, chess, go, backgammon, poker/other card games as we could fill up the list with those.

Do kids still play board games? I don't know any that do.

2. Never played it
Then again, I never played Risk until I got to college and found myself around others who played it.

Looks like a good game. It's based upon: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dictionary_%28game%29

4. Avalon Hill games were great
Diplomacy, D-Day, Panzerblitz etc. The problem was finding people to play with. That got easier in college.

5. Nowadays
the only game I play with my friends is texas hold em. Which I love, but it would be nice to play some of those old school games. With humans. Not on the computer. There is something to be said about live gaming sessions.

12. I suppose I will second that
Though I generally came in 3rd. I was the better tactician, but the two "real adults" that played with us were friends, and knew when to trust each other. Which was always. Even with superior planning, a pair of solid allies will generally beat a gaggle of impatient youth at that game.

21. Ugh, the last time I played that, I was Austria forced into an alliance with Turkey
by my obnoxious Italian neighbor. That alliance doesn't work at all, and I was about 2 turns away from being prepared when the inevitable backstab happened.

6. other, and we play board games
we play at meet ups a couple of times a week.

The stuff I play is way beyond the stuff you have listed. My favourite game of all time is Power Grid, but I also like Puerto Rico and Settlers of Cataan.

I have several expansion boards for Power Grid, too. So far, I have the US, Germany, Spain/Portugal, Brazil, France, and Italy.

Munchkin Quest is fun if you have 3 or 4 hours to kill. For quick games, I like Carcassonne and Ingenious. A bit random, but fun.

And in the EARLY 70's I owned Luftwaffe but could not find anyone to play with. Threw it away about 20 years ago.

22. I think it's pretty unbalanced
With my friends, we had to adopt the "Soviet Union can't attack on its first turn" home rule to give the Axis a chance, and even with that, they were definite underdogs.
Also, it's a little too simple to be a good grognard game, and yet way too complex and long (and long to set up) for any casual gamers.

It is fun though. and it's a game that is pretty familiar to most people that play games beyond the common family games.

25. You get that with a lot of wargames
I believe the only truly balanced wargame was Avalon Hill's Tactics II which was rather abstract.

Okay, it's a card game, but it does have a spinner and little paper placemat-like things for your cards as you play them through. Like this:

Here's an idea of what the cards look like, too:

since you left out checkers, that just leaves tic. Tic tac toe would require too much strategery.

You may not have heard of it, because I just invented it. Well, the title, anyway. The concept needs to be 'fleshed out,' which sounds like a job right up the DU Lounge's alley. :)

23. Do card games that aren't "playing-card-deck" games count?
If so, Dominion (my wife and I play this one like rats on crack) Bohnanza and 1000 Blank White Cards.

Carcassone is pretty great too.
