5. Simon & Garfunkel - The Boxer
Asking only workman's wages
I come looking for a job
But I get no offers,
Just a come-on from the whores on Seventh Avenue
I do declare, there were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there

Sadly, there are no more whores on 7th Avenue.

8. Ratcliffe Highway, a 19th century folk song
Located in one of the less salubrious areas of Victorian London, and popular with sailors looking for a 'good time':

Ratcliffe Highway

As I was a walking down Ratcliffe Highway
A flash looking packet I chanced for to see
I hailed her in English, she answered me clear
I'm from the Blue Anchor bound for the Black Bear
Sing too relye addie, sing too relye ay.

She had up her colors, her masthead was low
She was round in the counter and bluff in the bow
She was blowing along with the wind blowing free
She clewed up her courses and waited for me

I tipped up my flipper, I took her in tow
And yardarm to yardarm away we did go
She lowered her topsail, t'gansail and all
Her lily-white hand on my reef-tackle fall

I said, "My fair maiden, it's time to give o'er
For twixt wind and water you've run me ashore
My shot locker's empty, my powder's all spent
I can't fire a shot for it's choked round the vent"

Here's luck to the girl with the black curly locks
Here's luck to the girl who run Jack on the rocks
Here's luck to the doctor who eased all his pain
He's squared his mainyards, he's a-cruising again.

11. Dublin Jack of All Trades, another traditional folk song
Title:
Dublin Jack Of All Trades

Copyright Statement
Oh I am a roving sporting blade, they call me Jack of all Trades
I always place my chief delight in courting pretty fair maids.
So when in Dublin I arrived to try for a situation
I always heard them say it was the pride of all the Nations.

I'm a roving jack of all trades
Of every trade of all trades
And if you wish to know my name
They call me Jack of all trades.

On George's Quay I first began and there became a porter
Me and my master soon fell out which cut my acquaintance shorter
In Sackville Street, a pastry cook; In James' Street, a baker
In Cook Street I did coffins make; In Eustace Street, a preacher.

I'm a roving jack of all trades
Of every trade of all trades
And if you wish to know my name
They call me Jack of all trades.

In Baggot street I drove a cab and there was well requited
In Francis Street had lodging beds, to entertain all strangers
For Dublin is of high reknown, or I am much mistaken
In Kevin Street, I do declare, sold butter, eggs and bacon.

I'm a roving jack of all trades
Of every trade of all trades
And if you wish to know my name
They call me Jack of all trades.

In Golden Lane I sold old shoes: In Meath Street was a grinder
In Barrack Street I lost my wife. I'm glad I ne'er could find her.
In Mary's Lane, I've dyed old clothes, of which I've often boasted
In that noted place Exchequer Street, sold mutton ready roasted.

I'm a roving jack of all trades
Of every trade of all trades
And if you wish to know my name
They call me Jack of all trades.

In Temple Bar, I dressed old hats; In Thomas Street, a sawyer
In Pill Lane, I sold the plate, in Green Street, an honest lawyer
In Plunkett Street I sold cast clothes; in Bride's Alley, a broker
In Charles Street I had a shop, sold shovel, tongs and poker.

I'm a roving jack of all trades
Of every trade of all trades
And if you wish to know my name
They call me Jack of all trades.

In College Green a banker was, and in Smithfield, a drover
In Britain Street, a waiter and in George's Street, a glover
On Ormond Quay I sold old books; in King Street, a nailer
In Townsend Street, a carpenter; and in Ringsend, a sailor.

I'm a roving jack of all trades
Of every trade of all trades
And if you wish to know my name
They call me Jack of all trades.

In Cole's Lane, a jobbing butcher; in Dane Street, a tailor
In Moore Street a chandler and on the Coombe, a weaver.
In Church Street, I sold old ropes- on Redmond's Hill a draper
In Mary Street, sold 'bacco pipes- in Bishop street a quaker.

I'm a roving jack of all trades
Of every trade of all trades
And if you wish to know my name
They call me Jack of all trades.

In Peter Street, I was a quack: In Greek street, a grainer
On the Harbour, I did carry sacks; In Werburgh Street, a glazier.
In Mud Island, was a dairy boy, where I became a scooper
In Capel Street, a barber's clerk; In Abbey Street, a cooper.

I'm a roving jack of all trades
Of every trade of all trades
And if you wish to know my name
They call me Jack of all trades.

In Liffey street had furniture with fleas and bugs I sold it
And at the Bank a big placard I often stood to hold it
In New Street I sold hay and straw, and in Spitalfields made bacon
In Fishamble Street was at the grand old trade of basketmaking.

I'm a roving jack of all trades
Of every trade of all trades
And if you wish to know my name
They call me Jack of all trades.

In Summerhill a coachmaker; in Denzille Street a gilder
In Cork Street was a tanner, in Brunswick Street, a builder,
In High Street, I sold hosiery; In Patrick Street sold all blades
So if you wish to know my name, they call me Jack of all Trades.

I'm a roving jack of all trades
Of every trade of all trades
And if you wish to know my name
They call me Jack of all trades.

14. Downing Street Kindling, by Larrikin Love
Lyrics to Downing Street Kindling :
(Verse)
Who says there has to be a beach to wear a bathing suit?
Well I would lie on pebbles lavishly but London's pebbles are dirt.
And I will paint with knives and guns to insure sure my art is incorrect and I will sleep on sheets of satin and eat my cigarrettes.

(chorus)
But England has nothing more to offer me, well everything that I adore came well before 1984.

We are on a single island I hope you see
And beyond our lonely country there is only the Atlantic Sea.
So I will burn a fire in Westminster using the door of Downing Street.
And when Tony rushes out complaining of a draft I'll let him warm his feet.

(chorus)
But England has nothing more to offer me,
Well everything that I adore
Came well before 1984.

(middle 8)
So goodbye, yeah I wish you all well
But I can no longer thrive in England for I think that it is Hell x2

(chorus)
This country has nothing more to offer me,
Well everything that I adore
Came well before 1984.

62. Rosemary Lane (another traditional folk song)
When I was in service
In Rosemary Lane
I earned the good will
Of my master and dame
Till a sailor came by
And called upon me,
And that was the beginning
Of my misery.

He asked me for a candle,
To light him to bed
Likewise a silk handkerchief,
To tie up his head
To tie up his hair,
As sailors will do
And he said"My pretty Polly!"
"Will you come on too?"

This maid being young and foolish,
She thought it no harm,
To jump into bed,
For to keep herself warm
But what happened there,
I will never disclose,
But I wish the short night
Had been seven long years

So early next morning
the sailor arose
And into my apron
Three guineas he throws,
Saying "This I will give you,
And more I will do
if you will be my Polly,
whereever I may go."

Now, if it's a boy,
He will fight for his King,
And it's a girl,
She will wear a gold ring
She'll wear a gold ring
And dress all in flame,
And remember my service

66. Thunder Road
Edited on Wed Dec-01-10 08:58 PM by WilliamPitt
The screen door slams
Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch
As the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again

Don't run back inside
Darling you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty but hey you're alright
Oh and that's alright with me

You can hide 'neath your covers
And study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers
Throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a saviour to rise from these streets

Well now I'm no hero
That's understood
All the redemption I can offer girl
Is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now ?

Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow
Back your hair
Well the night's busting open
These two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back
Heaven's waiting on down the tracks

Oh-oh come take my hand
We're riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh-oh Thunder Road oh Thunder Road

Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey I know it's late we can make it if we run
Oh Thunder Road sit tight take hold
Thunder Road

Well I got this guitar
And I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back
If you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride it ain't free
And I know you're lonely
For words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free
All the promises'll be broken

There were ghosts in the eyes
Of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road
In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines roaring on
But when you get to the porch they're gone
On the wind

So Mary climb in
It's town full of losers
And I'm pulling out of here to win,,,

- The Boss

67. Freefallin' by Tom Petty's got a couple
And all the vampires walkin through the Valley
Move west down Ventura Boulevard.

Also

I wanna ride down over Mulholland
I wanna write her name in the sky.

While we're on the subject of Petty, there's also American Girl:
Yeah, she could hear the cars roll by out on the 441, like waves crashin' on the beach.

The only other ones I can think of off the top of my head that aren't in the OP have all been mentioned in other posts: Highway 61, Penny Lane, etc. I'm sure I could come up with a few more if I gave it some thought though. Street names are pretty common in songs -- gives a song a sense of place that a simple town or city name doesn't quite do.

93. Hey, this is cool
I looked it up at http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/97531/ "A log is a book a trucker keeps to record his/her miles and what is being carried in the truck. So maybe this is a log of his travels down the road of life."

Also, here's a cool slowed down version of that gorgeous guitar. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PDGI4cPYUE&feature=related

79. Indian Lake, The Cowsills
You take a bus marked "Lakewood Drive"
And you keep on ridin' 'til you're out of the city.
Where the air is fine with the sweet smell of pine
And the countryside's pretty
And you'll see daffodils, peepin' over the hill
or a honey-lovin' mama bear
Just take a left at the bridge, go down to Quakertown Ridge
And in a minute you're there

Mermaid Avenue that’s the street
Where all colors of goodfolks meet;
Where the smokefish meets the pretzel
Where the borscht sounds like the seas;
This is where hot Mexican Chili
Meets Chop Suey and meatballs sweet;
Mermaid Avenue she’s a nervous jerk
But, still, she’s hard to beat.

Suassos Lane is just an alley
Up here in old north Plymouth,
You saw my fish cart
Roll here is Suassos Lane.

They said I killed him,
Said I killed the payroll carrier,
Over in South Braintree,
Thirty-Five miles from Suassos Lane.

My name's Lefevre Brini.
On the same day, Bart Vanzetti
Brought fish to Cherry Court,
One block from Suassos Lane.
