Looks like my dad's gonna die.
He's in ICU right now. His liver is shutting down. Doctors aren't very optimistic. He's in a coma and they think if his liver goes, it'll only be a short time before he goes, as well. Dad doesn't qualify for a transplant because of his medical issues.

Those who know me on DU know I've had a lot of issues with my dad. But this is still hard.

4. i'm sorry you and your dad are going through this
i don't know about any issues you've had with him but you love him and that's the most important thing--love--in spite of it all--love goes on and on.

the hardest thing in the world is having to say goodbye for now.

my heart goes out to you.

10. I'm so sorry, Irishman. You must feel awful.
I know he is in a coma, and that you two had issues. But if you need to say anything to him, he'll hear you. It will make you feel better to say the things you need to say to him. And you won't have any regrets later. Believe me.

And take care. :pals::hug:

12. So sorry DI
In situations like this often not only do we mourn the parent we had, but we also mourn the parent we didn't have.
We mourn for the parent we wished we had.

24. Liver issues are very difficult
As you know, your liver is very important. But life is miserable long before one reaches the shutting down stage. Death may be relief for him. I am so sorry, but you can talk to someone in a coma. Maybe give you both some closure/release.

29. Another update...
Dad had a minor heart attack. Doctors are prepping my mom for the inevitable by asking her whether they should do chest compressions should he have another one. She said yes, unless it becomes obvious it won't matter a lick.

So, it's not looking good. :/

41. Sending my thoughts to you, DI, and to your father.
Please continue to talk to him for as long as you can, even if it appears he's not hearing you, for we never know. From my experience with my mom almost two weeks ago, I think they do hear you. No matter the issues we have with them, there is still an invisible bond that nothing can ever rend.

Also sending comfort to wrap around yourself, and wishes for a peaceful leave-taking for your dad.

49. I raise a glass of 12-year old Jameson's to you and your Dad
Whatever your issues were, they're in the past. If you got something to learn from it all, learn it well, carry it with you, and move on. He had his shot and now it's over. You are young and have a long road ahead of you, we hope. I never knew the man, but I know he helped bring into this world a damn fine Drunken Irishman! Slainte!

48. Well its not to late!!!
Go to his bedside and tell him that despite your differences he is your DAD and you are the man you are partly because of him. It would be honest and truthful. Because even though we have differences with the ones we love, if we avoid being the kind of person that we are not pleased to be around or learn not to do the things that we don't like, we have learned something valuable from that person no matter how bad we think they are.
