And the Hindu religion was the first introduction into spirituality I had.

10. A lot of people seem to forget...
...that American economic nationalism isn't going to stop someone in another country from taking a job that's offered. Frankly, we non-Americans could give a rat's ass if you Americans think that those jobs "belong to you" -- if they're on offer, we're not going to say no. If you (as Americans) have problems with that, you should take it up with the people who are outsourcing the jobs in the first place, not blame it on the people at the other end who are just trying to get by, same as anywhere else... You could try, oh, say, *organizing*...

At least I assume, priyanka, that you're making a veiled reference to those "blame Indians for outsourcing" comments around here.

So where are the emerging Indian entrepeneurs who will compete with our economic overlords at the top?

69. Foreign customer support is usually worse
...and India tends to get singled-out because of the outsourcing trend.

Also, in addition to culture/language issues, India's IT industry is behind the curve when it comes to actual experience (so they tend to be not as expert, although they are catching up).

Still I won't blame them as individuals.

What the Asian Tigers did to our auto and electronics industries in 20 years, free-trade offshoring will do to IT, engineering and others in less than 7. And it will do this without allowing foreign competitors to emerge. It is a drastic shock that eventually results in no real competition (just labor pools competing across borders-- within the same company-- then being dumped ).

If international competiton is supposed to only occur in the lower-middle classes, then the wealthy have just defined themselves as being relatively worthless.

22. I don't blame Indians or India
Edited on Tue Mar-30-04 07:28 PM by Mountainman
I just refuse to talk to them when they call me for collections or to make a sales call. It isn't their fault that an American lost their job to an Indian. But I refuse to support such action which is my right.

I got sales call from SBC Communications, my phone company. The caller was an Indian woman who politely introduced herself and I then told her I will not talk to her and not to call me again. I got a letter from SBC stating that I will not get any future sales calls.

If we refuse to do business with companies that out source then it will be just as costly to use Indians as to use Americans.

I'm doing my part even though it is like a grain of sand on a beach.

I believe that globalization has the effect on Americans to lower their standard of living. I don't want to support that and I don't have to.

In America we are heading for a society made up of the wealthy ruling class and the working poor with no middle class. I do not want to see that happen so I will vote for those in power who are working to prevent that and I will do what ever I can to prevent that.

Like I said I have nothing against Indians or India. It sounds like I am trying to be PC but I have a few Indian friends who are computer consultants.

62. It's not that easy...
Because of the company I work for and the part of the industry I've moved to, a lot of Indians I work with either have a green card and working to get US citizenship, or they're already citizens. Competing for jobs with actual Indian immigrants IMO is a welcome change; it doesn't represent a structure that was setup to abuse people like the current offshoring.

Before, it was H-1B city. Talk about indentured servitude.

But just so you know, some Indians you speak to are Americans. Maybe you should ask them about that before refusing to speak with them.

Of course, ther is some merit to the anti-India stance when the phone support personnel are baselessly RUDE toward their customers. I don't care which country a person is, you don't mistreat your customers under ANY conditions. Period.

You'll also see why we have such an interest in the India/Pakistan tussle. Not for the people. But for the money our corporations would lose if they nuked each other because somebody spilt their glass of kool-aid. x(

Which is far more than one "fucking" country. :-) I've had Americans be rude to me too. But these days, I'd expect the AMericans to be pissed and Indians to be happy because they're getting all the jobs. Duh.

Didn't you read my post? I'll put the part you missed in boldface:

...RUDE toward their customers. I don't care which country a person is, you don't mistreat your customers under ANY conditions. Period...

Pardon the bad grammar, that should say "...country a person is in..."

In the end, I neglected to say a big point: The Indians, like the Americans, are being told what to say and do by their American corporate epxloiters. If a corporation can exert control or look threatening, you can bet your sweet bippy they're going to do it. Again, I apologize for this one oversight... Please take me off your "anti-India racist" list now.

You do have a valid point, but I'm starting to think you're conducting a witchhunt and spinning what people say against them. Tsk tsk.

65. Why don't you go after Oprah and the one em-cee from "The View" as well?
They went to India and found out some frightning things about what goes on there to the Indian women, then came back to America to tell the whole country.

Surely they must be spreading anti-India propaganda?

67. again saying something that is actually true
is not propoganda...maybe you need to look up the word in the dictionary?

make generalizations about people and their skill level based on ethniicity and the country of origin is racist

DID I accuse anyone of propoganda?

75. Hating India because their people want jobs is like
hating America because the neo-cons are fascist bastards. Its absurd. If you don't like outsourcing go punish the corporate fat cats. If you don't like belligerant nationalism, then vote Democratic in November.

I love India :toast:

between various visits. Being of a subcontinent religion (buddhist) i met my spouse in Benares/Varanasi.

If there is a place on earth, beyond nations, cultures and religions
that i would call home, then the high himalaya's are that place.

Namaste,

India, being 3+ times the populalation of the USA, and many
subcultures that would make it the equivalent of the EU in complexity of language and style... oh what a lovely homeland.

So many lives....

Visit india, travel the length and breadth and discover for
yourself the magic of the great and ancient land.

I could live off of my investments without having to work. You can rent a apartment for less than $100/month there! But you have to be careful what you eat and drink.

Also, India will not let you come and live there. You can get a tourist/business visa for 10 years, but you have to leave every 6 months and go to the border and leave for a couple of days.

86. i am half indian and half arabic
which can only mean that i am loathed two-fold in the country of my birth. isn't that WACKY. actually it's kind of sad. also i was not aware: that indians are generally incompetent (wtf did that come from??), that indian women are the beautifulest in the world (it maybe that i am desensitized to the appeals of the exotic eastern vagina), nor that unemployment trumps that virtue of virtues, TOLERANCE

89. some answers
also i was not aware: that indians are generally incompetent (wtf did that come from??): Umm A lot of posts were made about a month or so ago railing against the "HEAVY INDIA ACCENT" and how indians could not pronounce their name so they could not get good customer service from india. Then there were posts about how Indian tech support sucks.

indian women are the beautifulest in the world: well we do have some women who i believe are gorgeous..i think anywhere in the world people would say that they have the most beautiful women.

ALSO WELCOME TO DU

94. since when did LANGUAGE BARRIER pass for INCOMPETENCE
bull hockey. pure americentric bull hockey. why should a former colony of the BRITISH populated by a billion people most of whom reside in rural areas be perfectly fluent in a foreign tongue. what a funny thing to read on a putatively progressive website, a tacit condonement of the spreading of the WICKED WAYS OF THE WEST, and what better means than by the contagion of LANGUAGE. why can't these people be satisfied that raggedy Raju Patel can at last enjoy a MAHARAJA MAC without having to drive very far at all. but you know, MEANWHILE PEOPLE ARE STARVIGN!!!!!!! PEOPLE!!!!!!!

honestly, i am shocked and appalled.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel. Exotic & bizarre.

Edit -- "bizarre" really was a bad choice of words. I couldn't think of anything else to describe a Marquez novel at the time, though.

98. Exactly.
However, I don't mean bizarre in a bad way. I hope that didn't offend you.

I think preserved elephant's feet are weird, but a cool family heirloom. All I meant is you could probably spin some good stories with your family's history and a liberal use of the imagination.

As opposed to Sweden, where many of my ancestors lived -- the East as well as South America are very exotic and strange. The hot temperatures, the sultriness, the exotic animals, the passion. Swedes are a pretty dull lot. Potatoes, cheese, lutefisk and Lutheran churches -- that is my ancestry, in a nut shell.:-)

I know, all things are culturally relative! Swedes are a very bizarre lot, actually. In a boring kind of way. We have no elephants. Just aged fish, soaked in lye.
