2. As Yogi Berra would say, "It's like deja vu all over again."
We've had this discussion since before Sarah Palin was a gleam in John McCain's eye. Can't we just both follow the Penguins?

P.S. And hold the cheese! :P :loveya:

P.P.S. When did the Karmanos All-Stars change their logo to a red X? :P

4. Dude, ***Phoenix*** has an NHL franchise.
Phoenix, one of the hottest cities in the USA, has a professional ice hockey team.

Let me say that again:

Ice hockey. Phoenix.

Does not compute.

7. Yes. And if I were from Winnipeg, I would have called them out instead.

8. Yes it does, actually
With controlled climates you can have an ice ring anywhere. And if its friggen 100 degrees outside what better place to be but in an ice arena? I'm sorry but this idea that warm weather climates should not have hockey teams is kinda of stupid IMO. Would you say its horrible if someplace like Buffalo produced an olympic swimming program? Minnesota has an OUTDOOR baseball field. Florida has an INDOOR baseball field.....When it comes to professional teams, I think the "climate" isn't important.

9. Point taken, for the most part.
I do agree that, given an artificial indoor climate, you can play most sports almost anywhere you want. Olympic swimming in Buffalo or even beach volleyball in Anchorage, I'm all for it.

But I don't think that having a professional franchise relocated to a city where the natural climate is prohibitive to playing that sport will generate the necessary local interest to keep that franchise alive. "Build it, and they will come" hasn't worked for the NHL in Phoenix. That franchise has been bleeding money to the tune of tens of millions of dollars a year and its average game attendance is regularly among the lowest in the league -- including last season, when it was THE lowest. If the climate isn't a factor, as you claim, then why is this franchise struggling so much in comparison to those that are located in colder climates? There could be other factors that I am unaware of (poor management or ownership, few "big name" players, etc.), so I'm curious to know your thoughts.

In this regard, having an NHL team in Phoenix doesn't make sense...at least not to me. That was my larger point, although I didn't elaborate or express that clearly in my first post. :hi:

10. Move the Coyotes either back to Winnipeg or bring them up to Milwaukee.

Wisconsin WILL support NHL Hockey, the fols form Madison will come over in droves, especailly if you have a couple ex-Badgers on the team.

Besides, Playing the Winter Classic at either Lambeau Field or Camp Randall would kick major ass.

11. Why the fuck are they called the Hurricanes? Raleigh is nowhere near the coast
They should be called the Research Triangulars.

OTOH, how many people make their living hunting whales in Connecticut?

12. Currently, none.
In the 18th and 19th century? A great many. At one point, Mystic was imminently threatening to become the 2nd largest city in New England. It also had the 3rd largest economy, the result of its' whaling trade and being a hub for international sea-shipment.

Also, the Whalers team name is a pun. They were originally the largest city and perennial champs of the WHA, a rival upstart league that challenged the NHL in the 1970s. Whalers.

15. Correct!
Also, they were originally based in Boston, but couldn't compete with the B's for attendance and media coverage. So they trekked west into the virgin hockey territory of Connecticut.

Saw them before I saw the Bruins even. :)

13. Look hard at this image

Raleigh is in either the purple or the red zone, but it makes no difference: a really massive hurricane will slam the living shit out of the Triangle.

here in the middle of NC.

We have to do a good PR job every so often so that the newcomers understand that even living 120 miles INLAND we can still get hit.

Floyd, Fran, Hazel is STILL talked about.

edit: I need to add Camille too, IIRC. My cousins were staying with us in the 1960s and had to delay going home to Philly because Camille came and soked the Eastern seaboard.

17. Because Connecticut is smarter, or more easily bored, or likes teeth better than NC?
Edited on Tue Sep-21-10 05:06 PM by jobycom
I don't know, but it's definitely a mark in Connecticut's favorable column.

:P
