160 Cobras Escape from Illegal Lab in China

Escaped cobras from an illegal breeding laboratory have been terrorizing residents of a Southwestern China town.

Around 160 of the highly venomous snakes have been accidentally released in Shijiao Township in the Chongqing municipality, according to AFP.

"The other day, Zhang Erfen had just gone into the toilet when we heard a loud scream and she came running out" after seeing a cobra inside, AFP reported, quoting the Information Times, a Chinese newspaper.

1. I am so glad I'm not there
I had no idea people were illegally breeding snakes. Odd.

2. There's a market for exotic snakes
I was watching one of those shows on Animal Planet called "I Was Bitten" about some guy in Florida that was unpacking a snake in Miami - and something happened where he got bitten. And, the snake was an inland taipan snake, which is really only found in Australia and is probably the most poisonous snake in the world. But, unless it was going to a zoo or a lab for study, WTF is an inland taipan snake doing in Miami?

(the interesting part of the story was the guy was bitten on the morning of 9/11 and the only antivenom for the inland taipan snake in the US is either in NYC or LA... they had to get all sorts of special permission to fly on 9/11 from LA to Miami while he was kept alive with generic antivenom.)

4. I should say
that the guy was a professional and had handled hundreds of poisonous snakes in the past... however, he made a mistake that one time & got bitten by the wrong kind of snake.

He actually survived, though.
