Saw "Hellraiser" last night, for the first time in more than a decade.
Edited on Sat Aug-14-10 08:23 AM by Orrex
What a terrible, lame-ass movie.

How did anyone think that Clive Barker was the genius of the horror genre? (I'm looking at you, Stephen King...)

And don't tell me that the film simply hasn't aged well--I remember finding it ridiculous and hokey even when I saw it 20 years ago. Certainly not scary in any discernible way.

2. I didn't like "Hellraiser"...

...but then again, I thought "Nightmare on Elm Street" was stupid and pointless, too.

I'm only familiar with Clive Barker as a writer from his "Books of Blood" collections
of short stories -- and they were just fucking INCREDIBLE!!!!

One of my favorites has a cranky gay couple on holiday in Eastern Europe somewhere
WAY out in the sticks and they chance upon an ancient tradition where two large
villages form absolutely enormous giants from the people being lashed together with
(physically impossible in the real world) belts and pullies and ropes and waging
symbolic war every 10 years or so(?). Something goes horribly wrong.
.
It's one of the most original, out-of-the-box stories I've ever read.

I'm also a huge Stephen King fan (though he became formulaic and redundant LONG ago.

Think of all "HIS" movies that suck.

3. But, you have to admit that "Pinhead" was a scary character.

4. What's your take on this, if I might ask..
I posted it earlier today and got no responses, but with 40 or 50 views, I'm guessing someone played the trailer....

Would like to hear your take.

5. Commented in-thread
I don't see a lot of films in the theater, but I'll probably catch that one on DVD.

6. I'm no conservative but...
... I have serious doubts about the sanity of anyone who loved the film Hellraiser. It's basically one step short of a snuff film in my mind - glorifying blood, death, pain and destruction in the guise of being a horror film. I saw it a long time ago as a teenager and it literally makes me nauseous to even think of it now. And I am no prude opposed to violent films; I am even a horror movie buff, preferring haunted/thriller/suspenseful plots (The Others is probably my favorite).

A disturbing film appealing to disturbed minds, that's about the best description I can apply to "Hellraiser."

7. Only seen a few parts of the movie.
Edited on Sat Aug-14-10 08:50 PM by RandomThoughts
I think I saw one of the last of the films, it had a few doctrines I had heard before. already dead doctrine and some worse ones.

Not worried about it, might even qualify as some form of change.

Not worried about that stuff. although the change would be elimination of pinhead LOL :), since from the parts of movies I saw, those things were terrible.

I also know Clive Barker knows some things, and have read some of his books.

8. I liked it.
I thought the original short-story was better but the book version usually is.

They're doing a remake apparently.

11. A remake could be done well IMO
As long as Barker isn't allowed anywhere near it.

12. I do think he goes off the deep end sometimes.
His original concept was cool. It does well when handled by other creators.

There were Hellraiser comics in the early '90s, very well done.

9. Dwarfs from space.
Edited on Sat Aug-14-10 09:51 PM by HiFructosePronSyrup
I had never seen it until a few weeks ago. I'd just seen clips of the Tall Man, and it looked reasonably interesting.

I had no idea it was about dwarfs from space.

On edit: oh wait, that's Phantasm. Disregard.

10. I liked it, but not as much as my friends did.
They straight worshipped that movie like it was the be-all-end-all of hell movies.

What I did like was that there was some matter-of-fact evil in that flick that really caught my attention. The kind of evil my ex-gf called "freight-train" evil. In the right state of mind (ahem), it scared the crap outa me.

I liked the second one better.

The third one was a joke.

14. A lot of movies haven't aged well.
I saw "Escape from New York" recently for the first time in ages, and couldn't believe how much I thought it sucked. I loved it back in the mid 80s when seeing it on VHS.

Same with "Conan the Barbarian" - saw it recently and it sucked pretty badly as well, but I liked it back in the day. (The score from Basil Polidorous still rocks, though!)

Also enjoyed the video with Lemmy and Pinhead. Wouldn't see the movie; don't like that kind of movie.

(Not a good copy of the video; looks like someone had his video camera aimed at the TV while the video was on.)
