2.  A lot of people don't like him or don't get him
But to me he was a genius for melody. The dude was Ray Daviesque, Paul Simonish, Rod Argent like. If he was in the beatles, his writing would have been considered not lesser than Lennon and McCartney

He had no peers of the same stature from his own generation IMHO.
I wish he lived life without such pain, yet it seems like many of the great ones, he needed it.
