Sushi + wasabi = YUM!
The old man and I had supper at a Chinese/East Asian buffet we like and noticed that they had started serving various kinds of sushi (fish, eel, shrimp, kashimi) with wasabi. I have never gotten to try real sushi or wasabi before do I tried some. SO DAMN GOOD! My dad thought I was crazy! That wasabi is like horseradish on steroids, it can make it feel like your nose is burning if you eat too much at a time!

4. I know, but it was a "Chinese" restaraunt.
They seem to assume that we are too dumb to know the difference.

2. I like sushi.
Not an everyday thing but it's pretty good. I know a guy who makes sushi right in his kitchen.

8. It's ridiculously simple to make
All you need is very fresh fish and prepared sushi rice, or you can leave off the rice and make sashimi. You can make your own wasabi paste or buy it commercially and even slice up some radishes wafer thin for garnish. The artistry comes in with how it's prepared and presented, but you don't have to be a master sushi chef to make something tasty. The only really difficult part is knowing the fish you are getting is fresh, which is solved by buying from a good fish monger you can trust to tell you what is really fresh enough to use for sushi and sashimi.

16. I'm not big on rolls
I actually like sushimi with nothing more than a bit of soy sauce and wasabi paste. My kids like rolls, so I do make them when I'm making it for the whole family. I have a bamboo roller and nori is easy enough to find locally around here.

27. Sometimes I just sit down to a nice bowl of sushi rice with wasabi and soy
I love the "wasabi surprise" that you get from time to time.

That said, the green paste that you find everywhere is not real wasabi, it's just horseradish with food coloring. Real wasabi is hard to find, and expensive to boot.

It's always nice to try something new. Just don't become a trend-sucker! We have enough of those out here on the coasts! :hi:

19. Sounds like you just have issues period
Contemporary sushi has been around for some 200 years and is widely available, pretty much anywhere that has more than two stoplights. It's about as trendy as espresso. But even if it were trendy, why you would get so visibly upset at someone partaking in it speaks volumes about you. So you may want to rethink your philosophy here.

Cheers!

15. Yes it does! Apparently I'm one of those annoying foodies who should eat fugu and die
but I love sushi. Try it from a real sushi place some time, where they make it fresh when you order. That will really blow your mind.

20. Was it real wasabi, or just green colored horseradish?
Real Wasabi runs in excess of $80/lb. here in the US.

I won't eat anything that comes out of the water unless it's been given the Louis Pasteur treatment.

21. I can't imagine buying a lb of the stuff
A little goes a long way. You can find it in the boutique grocery stores around here and it's not prohibitively expensive. I can't remember what I paid for a tube the last time I bought one, but I'm sure I would have remembered if the price was outrageous.

90% of those little tubes list horseradish and not wasabi.
I've looked at a few of those myself, the ones that list real wasabi cost about double.

The lb price is in the bulk range a restaurant would buy

23. Yes, and it's easy to find real Wasabi around here
I don't believe you can find it at the regular supermarket(although you might be able to get the green horseradish), but it is available in the boutique and asian markets. I bought a tube of the green horseradish stuff once and immediately could tell the difference. The real wasabi paste I get is exactly like what you'd find in a top notch sushi house. At least I can't tell the difference.

24. Dumb...dumb...dumb
I went to a business dinner in a Sushi restaurant a couple of years ago. I was one of the three that let the other 3 people who knew whats good to eat order the boat load of sushi stuff.

Not knowing what Wasabi looked like, I clamped my chopsticks around that green little morsel and popped it into my mouth like a Bon-Bon. All I can say about that is do not try it if the opportunity presents itself to you. Hot and burning doesn't begin to describe the sensation.

25. Sushi is fun
I don't mind a little Wasabi but I prefer the pickled Ginger. Ultimately, it's the Nori that turns me on. I don't really care if my Sushi has fish on it but I adore it when it contains Flying Fish Roe.
