there are simply too many great female singers to do a poll like this.

Assertive without being aggressive, aggressive without being overbearing, feminine without being weak, sexy without being slutty. Of course, that was before she STOPPED being a woman in rock.

I worked at a record store several years ago, and I had my eye on her box set, This Woman's Work. It cost a couple hundred dollars at the time. Well, they GAVE it to me for my going away present. OMG! :loveya:

59. One more Kate item of note...
Have you seen her concert - from 1979, I think - 'Live at Hammersmith Odeon'?
I think it's available now on DVD. I have an old VHS copy that I have totally worn out.
Anyhow, it is FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC. You can search you tube for some of the songs from that period - 'Feel it', 'James and the Cold Gun' - and you will find some of the 'Hammersmith' performances.

Girl, if you haven't seen that concert, you are in for a huge treat. :)

61. I have the Singles File
and the Hammersmith show on VHS. But I haven't watched them in a dog's age, because we disconnected the VCR years ago. The Singles File is all of her videos, plus some I had never seen until I got that tape. Because, unfortunately, I didn't live in London at the time. :(

Also: this bizarre book:

Here's to you, my fellow Kate fan! :toast:

I know DUers love to trash the Carpenters and worship Bob Dylan who sounds like a goat giving birth, but Karen's voice was pure ear candy, possibly the best alto of the 20th century.

Yes, she had a terrific voice. Too bad she's not around now to balance out all the high-pitched warbling that passes as 'singing' now.

56. Voted for Ronstadt, but...
Edited on Tue Jun-08-10 12:51 AM by Amerigo Vespucci
...she hit a formula with those Peter Asher-produced 70s-80s albums that got weaker and weaker with each new release. It made sense for her to step away from that completely and do the Spanish language and "standards" albums, but she never made it fully back to what made her famous. Since then her albums have had mixed creative and commercial success.
