2. Spinal Tap because their manager called UNC-Chapel Hill "just a cracker university"
But since I haven't seen all the fake bands perform live I'm really not certain.

6. Actual rocker Stevie Ray Vaughan's amps caused a power outage at UNC
Those were some damn amps that really went up to 11.

Bet it annoyed the hell out of people in math building next to Memorial Hall.

7. I love Spinal Tap.
But I didn't know until today when I did the NYTimes crossword puzzle that they spelled their name with an umlaut over the n.
I'm not sure exactly what an umlaut is, but i always thought it went over vowels.

31. What about The Monkies?
I'd rank them pretty high because they were an ENTIRELY fake band, created from people who didn't know each other prior to the completion of casting for the show. Still, they managed to get some hits because they were actually pretty damn good.

I voted "Spinal Tap", but COME on. The "Young Ones" crew did almost as well.

Considering who was involved, The Rutles disappointed me. A few scattered LOL moments in a sea of "meh".

36. I'd vote for Spinal Tap, but the Rutles really established the template
The strength of both projects was the fact that no matter how absurd the satire, it remained grounded in reality and relied HEAVILY on viewers being able to connect fictional moments with real-life personalities.

One of my favorite aspects of "This Is Spinal Tap" is the number of musicians who have stepped up to claim their spot as the "inspiration" for various bits.

Don't Look Back

DA Pennebaker's seminal rockumentary of Bob Dylan's UK tour of 1965. One of the declared inspirations for This Is Spinal Tap, the film offers a searingly candid view of the young, supremely confident Dylan on tour. We see him granting an audience to his nervous acolyte Donovan who sings To Sing For You in a nearly embarrassing homage to his idol. Dylan is shown suffering from the everyday niggles of touring, such as singing The Times They Are A-Changin' with an initially dysfunctional mike - it isn't plugged in. The most obvious reference in This Is Spinal Tap is the getting-lost-backstage scene. After the Manchester gig, Dylan and his entourage are seen scurrying around backstage desperately trying to find their way out, and Dylan enquires urgently: "Where's the door?"
