Two A's and an A- for the semester - ARGH!
I was really hoping for three A's. I really don't understand why I got the A-... in graduate school that's like getting a B.

Yarp - I'm inching my way to becoming Dr. Hee-haw! ;)

4. Honestly, not really.
This is my third seminar in which I've received an A-. I know that's a good grade on paper, but for a doctoral program, below a B- is considered failing. A- is something like a B. It's the grade that the prof's will give you if you're doing "okay."

2. Meh, in my second semester at college I got As in all 4 of my classes.
Organismal Biology, English Comp-Lit II, Intro to Physical Anthropology, and World History II.

5. That's really great - good for you!
Unfortunately, as I was explaining to one_voice, an A- is a fairly mediocre grade in a doctoral program.

7. Well I'm still working on my BA, so I wouldn't know anything about grad school!
:P

I originally majored in Biotech, but then switched to Lingustics/Foreign Languages, and then I lost Pell Grant eligibility and I'm determined not to take out any loans so I am taking only 1 or 2 classes at a time right now.

8. Very smart!
Luckily my grad school is paid for, but I still have a large undergraduate loan that lingers. It's like bad acne - no matter what I throw at it, it won't go away.

Linguistics/Foreign Languages - so what language are you concentrating on?

10. I think you're discounting the A- too much; a grad-school B is like a C
and a C is like an F, but an A- is still a form of A. I think if your professor wanted to express real dissatisfaction with you it would have been a B+. And anyway, there aren't any As or Bs in PhD...

Congratulation on getting through the semester (hope the summer is a good recharging)!

15. Yeah, I guess that half a letter grade shouldn't be a big deal.
I guess another issue here is that I've received A-'s for what I thought was worse work than what I turned in for this class. Oh well.

Par-tay!

21. The first year in my program was a bit rough, I'll admit.
But we had a year-long theories class that entailed hundreds of pages of heavy reading each week of social and media theory. I made it through, too... with A's and A-'s. :) My second year was also stressful, but not as intense.

Every program is different, of course, but I know that you'll be just fine. You're very intelligent, and all you need to remember to do is to keep organized and be methodical in how you construct your work time. Also - make sure to make time once in a while to relax!

14. I wonder how I'm going to do in grad school when I start this fall.
My grades were pretty mediocre as an undergrad, but that was 9 years ago when I was putting in minimal effort. Grad school is a whole new beast that I feel like I actually am excited for, so this should be different. I just hope that I don't wind up retaining any old bad habits.

20. One of the nice things about graduate school...
is that the folks in class with you are there because they want to be there, so your classroom experience will be much more invigorating.

That includes you, too!
