Esoteric, long-shot music question (classical)
During the day I leave my DirectTV tuned to 834, "Classical Masterpieces." I listen to their classical programing, and when I hear something I haven't heard (or something of which I can't remember the name or composer) I take a quick peak at the TV screen for that info.

Last October, I heard a beautiful piece (the name of which I have forgotten) that I determined was by an American composer. Although the piece sounded symphonic, the performer was listed as "The Gold Band." The composer and "the Gold Band" linked, if I remember correctly, and it was a west coast connection. I had the pleasure of listening to that piece a number of times in the fall. I even wrote the info down (somewhere).

I have not heard it lately on DirectTV, but I would like to find a CD. Anyone have a clue from this scant bit of info?

1. No clue
sorry. Could it be a band associated with one the the big universities? I looked but did not find anything. Occasionally I will hear some band music on my classical station and they are often a university band. I will keep my ears open and ask around, since I am a classical musician I have a few resources. Bookmarking, I will PM you if I find out.

2. I think "Gold" might have been the director.
My fault for misplacing my notes. I always keep a legal pad for just this kind of thing. Thanks.

3. Could it have been
Morton Gould the composer? He has written some mighty nice band music.

4. No. Definately not Gould.
The composers name was completely different. When I had it in my notes, I Googled the composer's name and "Gold Band" and found a connection. Now, when I Google "The Gold Band," I get stuff about hight school marching bands.

5. Have you tried to email the channel?
I did a google on "classical masterpieces channel 834" and got lots of hits that might help.

I have no idea, and I am up on classical music.

7. Let us know if
you find it. I just fired off a couple of e mails to some band director friends of mine.

9. Was it the Goldman Band? A very, very famous band that
was conducted by Edwin Franco Goldman. I think they're still around. I heard them at Damrosch Parl at Lincoln Center back in the 1980s.
