He shook his arm as though maybe something were wrong. Down to his final attempt to break the Alaska high kick record at the Native Youth Olympics at the Den'aina Center on Thursday, Yako McCarr gathered himself.
A week ago at the Lower Kuskokwim School District meet, he reached 94 inches. If he could reach that height at the state meet, it would mean a NYO record.
"I always get nervous when going for a record," McCarr said. "I kick them good when I don't know the height."
McCarr's arm locked up on his second of three attempts at 94 inches, and he said it scared him a little, but it didn't affect his final attempt. His reach was high enough, but his location was off -- he missed the ball suspended almost eight feet above the floor.
