Do you ever meow back at your cat when it meows at you?
Am I the only one here who does this?

1. My wife and I both do that.
We have one cat we have nicknamed the squeak toy, because of all of her meowing. I think she understands us, if we squeak back at her.

23. That's funny. My cat Max sounds like a squeak toy
But he's a huge, 17-pound squeak toy! He mews like a little kitten and gets happy when I try to mimic him.

2. Mine gets excited when I meow back to him....
I've sometimes wondered if I've actually said something of importance to them they've gotten so excited...

9. I don't actually meow, but I usually say "What?" in the same tone.
That will almost always result in a conversation. My dog uses little yips and whines to elicit a response from me. I've had my girls for 9 and 11 years respectively, so we've gotten to know each other quite well. I think my dog has the vocabulary of a two or three year old child. She understands a lot of what I say.

10. Yeah, same here, I give short replies in English using the same tone
My cat talks and responds to that. Of course she may also be saying, "NO! I didn't say THAT!"

12. Absolutely.
I can usually tell what he wants by the way he meows at me to begin with. One kind of inflection means "belly rub", one means "food", one means "get the other SOB away from me now", and one DEFINITELY means "I've had a rough day and you need to leave me the ***### alone"!!!

13. mine is constantly
bitching at me to open the door, turn on the water (he likes it fresh!), leave him alone, rub his head, - he panics if the dogs are outside and it's dark and cold/wet out. Oh and god forbid that his food has run out - or if I should either A) wake him up; or B) make him move when he's all comfy. (No matter that my leg has gone completely numb from his lying there!)

I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure I've heard him call me "stupid" on occasion.

14. All the time. He meows to us and we respond in kind.
But when we talk to him, he doesn't return in kind. He just meows. He hasn't learned English yet.

I also meow songs to Pitter-pat, who we also nicknames our Little Squeak Toy. And, when I sing to him, he will try and join in. It is so cute.

Our neighbors in our building say that when we're gone, they can hear him still talking to himself and singing. He entertains everyone. He has never met a stranger, you know. :)

15. Constantly. We carry on many conversations.
Cats have an amazing variety of vocalizations. Almost all of them are pleasing -- yet another reason I greatly prefer cats over canines.

22. I call my Ruby "Mrow-mrow"
You can say I meow back at her when she meows at me. Her habit is that she meows twice, hence the nickname "Mrow-mrow."

26. i have one who will sit there and stare at me
when i acknowledge her with a "what" she will open her mouth but nothing will come out of it.

she does meow at other times but for some reason at those times no sound will come out. she just assumes i know what she wants. food, belly rub, go outside.
