Thinking of going to the Bodies Exhibition in Dallas
http://www.bodiestheexhibition.com/dallas/the-dallas-exhibition.html

It's a traveling show that will be here until the end of may. It's in several other cities as well. Tix are just under thirty bucks- not bad, really. The Tut exhibition was about the same (last year).

Anyone else here gone to see it, or are planning to?

1. One of those exhibitions was here in NC a year or two ago: I decided against going
because there's frequently some question about the provenance of the bodies and because press coverage suggested some of the posing was more oriented towards entertainment than scientific education

3. My dear Prisoner_Number_Six!
I saw it when it was here in LA, and all I can say is: GO!

It was truly fascinating, and well worth whatever we paid.

You will see humans as you have never seen them before...

The atmosphere was one of hushed reverence, much as you'd find in church. Quiet whispers, people asking questions, and getting answers...

Do. Not. Miss.

:hi:

15. You I trust. I'm gonna go.
Sorry I took a while to post this, but I was out slaying a computer virus for a client. As always, I emerged triumphant.

16. Ah, no worries!
I thought you had just posted this, and then sat back to watch the fireworks!

And of course you slayed the computer virus!

You won't be sorry having seen this exhibit...

Ignore the naysayers. It is worth seeing.

it isn't like it's medical school this is for ENTERTAINMENT, there is one of these in every city where there's a ripley's believe it or not

they are cutting up human bodies FOR FUN

and you're going to give t hem money for this?

6. You may find this hard to believe...
But it's educational. The people displayed are done in a way that allows you to see how they functioned.

It is not just for fun. I enjoyed myself, but it's more than that.

As a nurse, I found it fascinating. There were groups of medical and nursing students who had come to see what many of them could not have seen any other way.

7. Are you joking?
seriously?

This type of exibit is important to people learning about the human body!

There is NOTHING wrong with that, most people have no idea what they are made of. Seems more educational if anything.

Your post really confuses me.

9. I saw this show and it is done with great respect to the bodies.
I am glad I went.

This is what we look like under the skin.

13. i saw the first one, and i thought it was as cool as cool gets. the volunteers
whose bodies are shown were all happy that their end brought some enlightenment. they said after the first one that they have been deluged with offers of bodies. nobody died so they could do this. they just died.
i would love to be one of those bodies.

18. Everybody was very quiet walking around looking at the bodies.
People donate their bodies to medical schools so this is not so different.

25. Oh please.
Such drama.

I saw the exhibit, and I'd see it again.

It's fascinating.

Here's a clue: I don't know who these people were, and they're not aware that I'm looking at them. So it works out for both of us.

27. here's a hint. entertainment and education aren't mutually exclusive
nor does art have to be boring

it's frankly, a lot of things

art
entertainment
educational

5. It is educational, but a bit macabre.
If you smoke the various smoker body parts are eye opening. I saw the show in Houston. I saw a smaller version in San Antonio as well. I work with bodies from the outside. I have also studied cadavers. These shows were a lot more educational with no overpowering formaldehyde scent.

Unless you find human anatomy disgusting.

It is truly educational, and allows us to see what normally remains hidden, under the skin...

12. I always feel bad for humans who end up being disected and such. That is why
I've always said I wanted to donate my body to medicine. There was a show on in Montreal a few years ago about murder. I thought that sounded really awful too. I'm just not into gore I guess.

But it's not in the least gory...

And it's not murder either...

I'd Google it if I were you, and have a look. You might be surprised.

you always felt sorry for people who end up dissected, but you want to be one?
these people donated their bodies to science. i would be happy to be one of them. it is science at a very human level.

Don't know what the policy is today. But yeah I said as a tween and I still say I would donate my body to medicine because it isn't fair that the poor end up there. And I have the same feeling about the show the OP was talking about.

Sorry if I was unclear. I have conduction aphasia and sometimes don't make sense though it is usually verbally that this is a problem. Actually I've had a great run on the DU and haven't often been asked to clarify..unlike when I talk out loud.

19. Definitely worth it.
There are several companies that present these exhibitions. Some of which are plagued by rumors that the bodies being shown were not all volunteers and that some of the bodies being presented are from China.

"Bodyworlds" is one company that has a clean reputation for not using a body unless it is voluntarily donated.

Check it out - wander all over that site. It explains the process, the various exhibitions, where they are, where they will be. I believe thay have four or five travelling exhibitions - that horse and rider you see - I believe it took three years to preserve and form that display.

I would DEFINITELY recommend anyone go and see one of these exhibits. Be sure and get the audio tour as well. Better yet, take a second year medical student.

23. Different Exhibits -
Hi,
I too saw the Gunther von Hagens Body Worlds exhibit. I found it fascinating and everyone was very respectful of the bodies, and it was very interesting and educational. I know there are a bunch of knock offs out there now, not sure of the provenance of the bodies for those others.

Peace

I missed the last time Body Worlds was here in Cleveland and now I have to wait. :(

The med students all go to these things, too.

Very interesting.

24. Y'know why most of the exhibits at those things are youngish Chinese males, right?
It's not hard to figure out.

Until these exhibits start documenting the origin of the cadavers in a transparent and reliable way, I wouldn't want to contribute my money to them.

26. I took my children. My oldest was was consuming any anatomy book she could get her hands on
at the time. The displays really expressed anatomy in movement. The exhibit helped develop her gift for life drawing.

The exhibit was not as shocking in person as one might anticipate. It was quiet and solemn in the display room.

It was the Body Worlds exhibit that we saw and it was before i heard of the controversy surrounding some of the companies.

One body here in NYC was cut up like steaks.
