2. Cashews would be great substitute...
:9

I do love the pine nuts, though.

Seems like walnuts might be a little on the bitter side. No me gusta walnuts.

5. Walnuts need to be peeled to cut the bitterness
and that step is enough to make cashews, peanuts, or almonds better nuts for pesto-like things. Almonds are good in a cilantro-lime pesto.

7. Fortunately, the local Cosentino's market sells pine nuts in the bulk bin.
Makes it easy to afford just what you need for a batch of pesto.

I also forgot to mention that for pesto, the walnuts need to be skinned. You're right, it would be bitter, if the skins were left on. It's not the easiest task in the world, but here's a video that shows how to do it: http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-remove-skin-from-walnuts-towel-262501/

10. Walnuts are near the bottom of my list anyway - cashews, pine, almonds all sound better to me.
Peeling them would not be worth the effort for me. :^|

6. I make my own pesto, too... Love it and it's always a hit.
I can find pine nuts at the store, just need a few tablespoons, but my problem's finding good fresh basil. I need to grow my own... :9

8. I get basil from Cosentino's, too.
They display it in the store the way you'd see a dozen roses...the bunch is standing up, wrapped in a layer of cellophane. The local Safeway also sells the "Organics" brand of fresh basil, which isn't as good as what Cosentino's offers, but it's fresh and of good quality. It's what I have on hand right now, and I will be using it later this evening with some fresh garlic and a can of Muir Glen organic tomatoes in a fresh marinara sauce for dinner.

14. Sounds wonderful! I'll just bookmark this... :-)
When I can find it, I get fresh basil at Price Chopper. It's in the produce section near the tomatoes. Theirs is the best, and you get quite a lot. The other large store around here is Hannaford and their fresh herbs are in tiny packages and not always very fresh and it's a crap shoot as to what they might have... :-(

12. Pesto is one of those things I can't keep in the house...
...because I tend to eat it with a spoon, straight out of the jar.
