Post some good blues.
Edited on Wed Mar-24-10 10:50 PM by Blue-Jay
All of this talk about bricks reminded me of the great Albert Collins.

Here's another. (Love the Rahsaan Roland Kirk sax-vibe, and love Debbie Davies on guitar - She's a real sweetheart.)

2. Sam Taylor and Heather Hardy...
.
...are just two more incredible reasons why it's GOOD to live in Tucson.
.
The pianist (Mr BoogieWoogie) is from the Netherlands, but a frequent
guest here. I don't recognize the bassist or drummer -- but this appears
to be maybe a show in Europe.
.
Sam will come into a bar with his guitar and sit in for a song or two
with whatever (good) local blues band is playing. He walks in COLD from
the street and IMMEDIATELY cooks like a nucular bum. When he leaves,
that band is VERY hard-pressed to keep up that energy level -- and is
all the better for him having passed through.

(I don't normally like flutes in my jazz either, but I'll make an exception once in a while.)

23. I do, but no need to put down a great musician in order to praise another
Edited on Thu Mar-25-10 02:19 AM by abq e streeter
Allman's playing on the two Hour Glass albums and an Hour Glass session in early 1968 at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, had caught the ear of Rick Hall, owner of FAME. In November 1968 Hall hired Allman to play on an album with Wilson Pickett. Allman's work on that album, Hey Jude (1968), got him hired as a full-time session musician at Muscle Shoals and brought him to the attention of a number of other musicians, such as guitar great Eric Clapton, who later said, "I remember hearing Wilson Pickett's 'Hey Jude' and just being astounded by the lead break at the end. ... I had to know who that was immediately — right now."

Allman's performance on "Hey Jude" blew away Atlantic Records producer and executive Jerry Wexler when Hall played it over the phone for him. Wexler immediately bought Allman's recording contract from Hall and wanted to use him on sessions with all sorts of Atlantic R&B artists. While at Muscle Shoals, Allman was featured on releases by a number of artists, including Clarence Carter, King Curtis, Aretha Franklin, Laura Nyro, Wilson Pickett, Otis Rush, Percy Sledge, Johnny Jenkins, Boz Scaggs, Delaney & Bonnie and jazz flautist Herbie Mann. Shortly after he recorded his lead break in "Hey Jude", he recorded all of the lead guitar in Boz Scaggs' "Loan Me A Dime." His soloing in the song is noted as some of the best ever laid down on record.

(The above is from wikipedia )

The guy recorded for and with Aretha, Wilson Pickett, King Curtis..............was he inspired by Elmore James and other great blues artists? To his great credit, yes.

P.S. not trying to pick a fight ; I love Elmore James and if you'll notice, posted a song of his above. Just was disappointed to see Duane Allman , who was also a brilliant, dedicated musician, put down for no reason. My apologies if I misinterpreted your intentions in making your comment re: Duane.

I love the guy. He's amazing.

I should've been more clear. There's no electric slide-guitarist who doesn't owe a debt of gratitude to Elmore James. I just picked on Allman because his was the first name that came to mind.

The best of the best.

I just found a Youtube post "Robert Johnson Exposed!!" in which some fundie goes crazy over RL's "selling his soul to the devil" to learn guitar. Actually, he worked with a great teacher - Ike Zimmerman- for a few years, not 6 months as Son House recalls, and learned to put what was in his head into the guitar.
Johnson was reported to be able to listen to a radio playing in the background while having a conversation and doing othr things, and days later playing what songs had been played on the radio note for note.
He could hear a song one time and play it. I believe he used the "devil" story for publicity, to draw crowds and make money. Obviously it worked - he is still known for it today, 72 years after his death.

79. He can be pretty scarey - especially his ghost and devil songs-
Some Fundies still believe he really sold his soul to learn the guitar, and since he is the "grandfather of rock and roll", all such music is of the devil.

But then they are fucking stupid anyway.....

but had heard so much about him from Sam F. that I practically felt like I knew him. Must have been a great thrill to play with such a great musician. And this would also seem to cast great doubt on your characterization of yourself as being only "mediocre" or something like that, on a recent thread.

That's one of my all time favorites. :)

I sure do miss Sam, and Flash too. We lost Ron Martin , Flash's long time bass player last year and Kevin Pharris who played rhythm guitar for Flash suffered a massive stroke earlier this year and is trying to recover now. So many of my good friends in the Tulsa scene have either passed or fallen ill lately...it's tragic. But I always try to remember the good times with them.

I've been jotting down stories about some of the times I had with the guys, I may have to see if I can gather them up and write a book about it all someday.

65. Shaun Booker
I used to go see her all the time out in Ohio. Once, she came down onto the dance floor and danced with me while she was singing :D Very hot and an amazing voice, if you ever get the chance to see her... DO IT!

71. Stevie Ray was so awesome.
I don't know why it is the really talented ones get taken too soon. He was a great bluesy rocker.

72. So many. I am from the MS delta, so blues is what I know.

I've seen BB King on more than one occasion. There are some awesome "unknowns" that play at the Blues Fest in the delta. That is some fun stuff. Take a cooler full of beer, plop down in the grass, and listen to blues all day long.

Bonnie Rait can do some good blues. I've seen her too. Little Milton wasn't too shabby either. I saw his last performance. He performed with Allman Brothers.

80. How about Guitar Slim
"The Things I Used To Do". Or Elmore James "The Sky Is Crying"...

I'm such a computer illiterate (maybe it's an age thing) that I have no idea how to post the actual tunes. Can you help?
