You would usually get an ad for a local bank or something else. I just went to dictionary.com to check a word (duh!) and the ad for Cheer Laundry Detergent almost hit me in the face (take a look) and it reminded me of the time and date phone line w/ the ad.

3. Until you mentioned it...
I had completely forgotten about that. One used to be able to call a number for useless stuff, too, like horoscopes.

5. "At the tone, the time will be..."
I called it a lot in the 70's, usually after a power outage nuked all of the clocks in the house. I never got an ad when I called, but that was before the Reagan era.

7. I remember calling for the time. It was the only way
to reset your clocks when the power went out.

Didn't have ads, though.

I remember a Brady Bunch episode where Peter? called Russia to talk to their leader, but got the time in Russian with the beeps. I think there was a big phone bill because of that, too.

8. When I had to set the time.
There weren't any adverts though.

I still call the weather WE6-1212. Advert free as well.

13. I do, but once my mom figured out I was doin' it, she decided
that if I could call the bank to get the time, I was old enough to have my own watch, learn to tell time and stop bothering the nice auto-time dealio at the bank.

15. I remember that!
And I heard a revenge story once where a cheating guy left town, his girlfriend came to his place, called the number for the time in Japan or somewhere, then left the phone off the hook for him to discover when he got home a week later.

I was always tempted to try that with someone.
