You will be fine, and he will be too...plus he will be grateful...

6. You know, I think that's a pretty good idea, for the first 2 weeks.
He'll need nursing care then, and it's better for him to get it where they're trained to do it.

Perhaps you could join him after he goes home?

It might be better...

Did he ask you to help?

I'm sorry about your step mom...I'd guess she resents you.

11. I want to be there for the 1st surgery &....
his initial hospital stay. One of my other sisters will be there the 1st week he gets home.

He told me not to come at first, but now my step-mother says "she could use the help."

I'm not all together sure what to expect. My primary goal is to be sure they take proper care of my father immediately following surgery-- keeping things as sterile as possible, giving him the correct meds, etc.

16. it's actually a better way to do it.
my dad had his done one at a time, and wished that he had them both done at once.

one recuperation period is better than two.

18. My husband is facing that.
They won't do both at once here. They schedule them months apart. He was set for the first surgery in December, and the doctor changed his mind and now says no surgery until he turns 60. They have fitted him with braces that cost over $2,000. (Completely covered by insurance, thank goodness.)

21. There is only one orthopedic surgical group
here in town. It would mean a 100-mile trip to the next closest doctor and time spent at an out-of-town hospital.

24. my father had one knee done a couple months ago. he didnt tell us kids
went in friday. got out sunday

he is obsessive about working out and getting back in shape. though immediately after, when we saw him about a week after surgery, he looked incredibly old, a couple weeks.... he had it down and was looking great, walking without cane ect..

it is the first handful fo days, but it all gets better

the best to your father.

34. Sending good vibes and hugs. Our gdaughter's other grandma had both done
a few years ago. She was up and around pretty fast, I was surprised. She had them both done at the same time.

My DH will be facing knee replacements in the future. He had bone & cartilage grafts done about 10 yrs ago. At the time he was in his mid 40's and they said he was too young to have replacements.

Sending prayers and good thoughts for your Dad and big hugs for you.

Yeah. My Dad was joking, "You know the difference between major and minor surgery?" Then he said, "Minor surgery is done on someone else, major surgery is when it's your own." He's always making jokes like that. :-)

40. I was just having a conversation with someone at work whose dog is having surgery
I know that it's not a totally apt comparison, but I shared with her the story of how my dog had surgery last year and it was harder on us than on him (he actually had a cancerous thyroid removed and then had six sessions of chemo). He bounced back fine and I wondered then if part of it was that he didn't have the mental stresses of worrying about it ahead of time that we would.

Sounds as if your dad has a great attitude about it!
