So...what are you giving up for Lent?
Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday.

For the Western Christian calendar, Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs forty-six days (forty days not counting Sundays) before Easter. It is a moveable feast, falling on a different date each year because it is dependent on the date of Easter. It can occur as early as 4 February or as late as 10 March.

Ash Wednesday gets its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful as a sign of repentance. The ashes used are gathered after the Palm Crosses from the previous year's Palm Sunday are burned.

I'm giving up cilantro for Lent.
"Um...do you LIKE cilantro?"
"No."
:-)

What are you doing without for the next 46 days?

3. Heresy
Lent is a time of study, prayer, contemplation and meditation.

The only reason to give up anything would be if it interferes with that. Giving up something for Lent is not an end unto itself.

Faith in Jesus Christ is sufficient.

16. "Prayer, penitence, almsgiving, and SELF-DENIAL"
Lent, in Christian tradition, is the period of the liturgical year leading up to Easter. The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer — through prayer, penitence, almsgiving and self-denial — for the annual commemoration during Holy Week of the Death and Resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the events linked to the Passion of Christ and culminates in Easter, the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

I was shocked to find out that today was "Fat Tuesday." I thought that was later in the year.

I think Lent is a great idea, even though I am probably not in that religion. It would probably save my life to practice Lent, so I want to learn more about it.

53. I don't think I could ever give up caffeine.
After having a bad acid reflux attack about a month or two ago, I looked over the foods to cut back on. Two irked me--caffeine and orange (citrus) juice.

I've cut back my orange juice to one small glass a day, but I don't think there's anything that's going to stop me from caffeine.

Some of the Dominican order were there and they looked like they used a stencil and packed as much ash into it as possible. It almost looked like it had been burned on. Mine doesn't even resemble a cross unless you look very, very hard.

For lent? I decided to give up cussin'. However, I was laughing so hard about the F***wad post that I had to read it to my hubby. I guess I didn't make it very long.

58. My vehicle...
The tranny recently blew up on the very night before I was gonna take the next morning to a mechanic to do some engine work on it, and I don't have the funds (and won't for months) to repair it or replace it with a rebuilt one...sigh...

;(

We desperately need to use it to visit our family doctor each month for our Rx, and last December, I was able to apply for dental and vision care b/c I was a federal employee for 18 years before I became disabled, and we both need some serious dental work done, as well as new Rxs for glasses/contact lenses. Both cost a total of about $80.00 in monthly premiums. We gave up cable TV to be able to afford them, b/c our health is obviously far more important. Having dental issues can cause serious health problems. That is why I feel that dental as well as medical coverage should be included in a public option for health care.

A guy I knew who was in the Army reserves at work once told me that his commanding officer said to him (quote) "You can ignore most pain, but not when it is coming from your teeth"...how very true!!
