I'm getting a refund this year on my taxes

About $500 on the federal return and $100 on the state return. I will actually get a larger return on my local taxes, about $800. The reason for that has to do with me being a trucker and living in a township that does not have a local income tax.

I usually don't get much back or may actually owe a little on the federal return due to the way that my taxes are withheld during the year, so the $500 was a surprise. One thing that helped was that I bought a new car last year and was able to write off the sales tax on it. You can take that deduction whether you itemize or take the standard deduction so be sure to grab it if you bought a new car last year.
