AZ DU'ers... (Phoenix, specifically)
Edited on Tue Mar-23-04 05:53 PM by M0rpheus
I just got back from a little fact finding trip in Phoenix. Met some pretty nice people there... :)
Considering a move there, if things don't get any better here in Chicago soon.

I'm looking for an entry-level tech job (or at least something that will pay the bills, without boring me silly), since I can't find squat here. Any Thoughts/Help would be appreciated.

Edit: to include the "where" I wish to be.

I am looking to possibly move to Phoenix, AZ.

Somehow I thought you might answer, but you are in the wrong place. :)

3. Phx short of teachers and nurses...
plenty of $6.00 jobs available. Plenty of construction odd jobs. If you're aggressive, you'll find a job here. A few weeks ago, my nephew and wife visited AZ from California, for the first time. They got home and put up their house for sale which they sold the same day they put it for sale.

They returned the following week to AZ and bought a house. A house worth over 1M in Cali, a house they could only dream of in Calif. They bought a huge luxury house in AZ for 350K. Their little old house in Cali sold for 800K. They were able to pay for their new house cash and have money left over for investing. They're both teachers and already have job interviews.

5. I'm no teacher...
But, I'm looking for something at least slightly challenging. If I have to start at the bottom, so be it...

What's the Apt situation like there... I kind of like the areas just east of 44th st and Thomas (one of the places I stayed while I was there), Hated Glendale though.

Are there a lot of temp to perm type jobs there?

8. I don't have enough posts to use the PM function yet.
I do much more reading, than posting.

But I have IM enabled for AIM or ICQ.
Feel free to use either one. They are always on.

I would appreciate the # to get started. :)
Thanks.

9. Tech's not good out here.
It's leveled off and no one is hiring permanently.

Hubby's a SysAd for a major shipping line; 10 years experience and we live in anticipation of his being layed off; close to the bone and saving what we can.

11. Really doesn't have to be tech...
Edited on Tue Mar-23-04 06:47 PM by M0rpheus
But that is where I am most comfortable.

I am a Jack of all Trades, from taxi driver to Middle management, and many stops in between.
So, 1 layoff (2 weeks after 9/11), a 60% paycut (From 50K to 21k), another layoff and now my last unemployment check later, I think it's time for a move.

I just need a place that is a little looser on the job front.
Chicago, just ain't doing it... :(

And since I have a few friends there, I thought PHX might be a good place to start.

The cab driver in Flagstaff already warned me about that place... "The Black Hole of AZ", got out of there ASAP! LOL!

Retail is doing well down here; if you can land in management it's a good start.

Edited on Tue Mar-23-04 07:06 PM by M0rpheus
To the tune of a $150.00 cab ride, split between me and another hopeless passenger, down the mountain in an ugly snowstorm. The bus I was supposed to take to Phoenix broke down somewhere.

Even in Flagstaff, the greyhound station is full of zombies in the middle of the night.:scared:
Another 6 hrs there would not have cut it...

I'd have to revamp my resume for retail, but it could be done.

Poo on the big cities. If this is a black hole, then it must be right for me.

I am all for people NOT wanting to move here. I like it just the size it is. :-)

17. No offense intended...
Edited on Tue Mar-23-04 08:08 PM by M0rpheus
But when you intend to be in a town for an hour and the first topic of conversation you have with a resident of the town (The cab driver), is the "black hole" comment...

One tends to be a little wary.

But, I did like the snow, it made me feel at home. :)

Your cars must last for years, since you don't use any salt up there.

Of course he is going to be bitter. When you're a cabbie, everywhere is a black hole.

My take is, if you don't like where you live, move, which is what you are trying to do.

But Phoenix? It is hell. Hope you like lots of Republicans, codgers, and 120 degree summers. My good friend Catshrink calls the region "The Valley of the Dumb". (Valley of the Sun).

That being said, you cannot offend me, unless you slander me, which you did not. So no problem - I don't want anyone moving to Flagstaff.

Welcome to DU. Good luck on your move!

21. It's beautiful, actually. I went to NAU there.
Still small-college-towny feel, except at the I-17/I-40 junction (tourist-chain store hell). Great, low-key nightlife.

The best Thai restaurant I ever ate at, too--in one of the old Rt. 66 motels, no less. That alone makes it worth the trip (the motel wasn't bad, either--nights with hubby off campus, you know!) Downtown/Rt. 66 is a blast on the weekends, too. Lots of great bands on their way west or east stop by, often bypassing Phoenix on their way to LA or points east.

Lots more leftists than Phoenix, too. Personally, I like the city, but I could live happily in Flagstaff indeed. I bet you'll love it.

Quite a bit cooler in Flag, usually, around 20 degrees cooler or so.

But it smells wonderful up there. Breathe deeply in Flagstaff.

hubby and I got back a week ago from a vacation there and were ready to pack up and move. The sun and the warm weather made it hard to come back to snowy, crappy, 30 degree Massachusetts. So I envy your move!

19. It was no picnic
To come back to Chicago.
34 Degrees and windy.

Windy enough to scare the crap out of me when landing at Midway (and planes DO NOT scare me).

Though, while I was in PHX they had a hail storm, and a day of torrential rains (didn't I miss the monsoon season?).

Just got back the 13th. Ready to go back...

But, I am fed up with where I am, and people continue to prove to me that the dumb are everywhere...

So today, almost anyplace is better than here.

Wouldn't mind stopping in Flagstaff for the more moderate weather on occaision, with your permission ZombyWoof. :)
