Most overrated rock song and band
I have to go with "Stairway to Heaven" as most overrated song. It's an ok song, but does it really need to be played every half hour on all the hard rock stations??

As for band, I say the honor goes to U2, with The Doors as a runner up.

8. have to agree with both "Freebird" and Sting
The song is puerile and juvenile and Sting's voice is the very definition of "annoying." Though, I must admit that the South American waltz he wrote for "Kate and Leopold," " Until," was actually very charming and a by-the-book S.A waltz.

9. Completely disagree with your band choices
Edited on Wed Aug-13-03 03:12 PM by mvd
I think most overrated in rock is Guns 'n Roses. I don't see much difference from the hair metal.

Others I find overrated:

KoRn
Soundgarden
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Flaming Lips
Sigur Ros
AC/DC
Limp Bizkit
Pantera
KISS
The Vines
The Hives
Aerosmith (because they are so often hailed as America's greatest rock band)
Kittie
The Mars Volta

"Stairway To Heaven" is a little overrated IMO, but I choose "Welcome To The Jungle."

12. Does anybody still listen to popular radio anymore?
It was still fun in the 1990s, but now I cannot find a station I can put on for a long period of time and enjoy. I have heard these "classic rock" songs so many times that I don't want to put any of those stations on again. They seem to have forgotten Motown and Atlantic records in their mix, which would improve things. Even college radio is a snore.

What was the last great pop song? Rob Thomas and Santana doing "Smooth"? That was years ago. They gave 'em a handful of Grammys for that gem, like it was a going-out-of-business sale.

Someone help me. Name a good current artist.

18. Exactly how I feel
The pop music of today is horrendous! I don't listen anymore because of how bad it has been. I think the last good album was Nirvana's album, and that was released in the early 90's!

I also understand about putting on the classic rock stations. I have heard them all too many times. Nowadays I listen to a station that plays 80's music, but that gets boring after awhile too.

20. So who are the artists to look for?
My previous post hints a predeliction for alternative, Motown. My high water mark was punk and "new wave" in the early 80s.

Of late, I look forward to the evenings of folk programming on weekends on my precious public radio station.

Maybe the stations are not there to play the good stuff. Who are the artists?

22. I think that when people say
"the white stripes are overrated", they're wrong. very innovative and out there, yet still catchy. incorporates old blues (a lot of his licks are old blues), weird punkish rhythms, classic rock, etc... good stuff.
the strokes are not as bad as everyone likes to say (I like them)

Weezer is a band that is still putting out good music (IMHO)

I don't think that Jack Johnson or John Mayer are bad at all (although the current trend by anyone who's not into pop music is to trash them)

I don't know, maybe that's a start? just my opinion, as usual:)

... they can't be overrated they are just getting started. And so far, they are sounding damn good.

The Strokes I have a bit more problem with - because when I hear them they sound EXACTLY like mid 70s Iggy Pop with the Hunt brothers rhythm section and EVERYTHING. Everything is derivative, but it is possible to be *too* derivative. :)

...most of it is pretty boring...even "alternative"

i think the early 90s was the last gasp of rock..alternative or otherwise...then it deteriorated into stuff like Coldplay and Smashing Pumpkins type of stuff.

The only things ive really liked lately have been Drive By Truckers, Gillian Welch, and Poi Dog Pondering...

... but I will disagree. They got the whole "prog rock" zeitgeist soaked in gas, hung around their necks and lit. Unfairly.

I can understand folks not liking that kind of music, but IMHO the critics constant trashing of them was always a kind of jealousy. "Rock" music is supposed to come from lower class kids with a guitar, and god forbid someone with actual musical talent (you can wish all you want but Emerson could have been a world class pianist in any mileau he chose, he chose money and women :)) should dare to play.

As for the "pretentious" claim, every single album of theirs contained a comedy novelty song, hardly the hallmark of "pompous".

51. okay this thread got funny
Although some people are dissing groups that I like.
I busted a gut laughing at the Grateful Dead joke. I used to like Floyd, but the last time I listened to "The Wall" I thought "God, this is a downer". I like Skynyrd, but have to admit that "Freebird" is over-hyped - quite slow and long.
The mention of Frampton reminded me of how this radio station I listened to at work played this song from "Frampton comes alive" that lasted about ten minutes.
On another thread I was surprised that so many people liked the Police, but my vote for most over-rated band is The Rolling Stones because I think they suck. If you start Mick Jagger up, I will turn the radio off every time. Probably Garth Brooks should be up there too since he is probably still the only person to have two albums in a row which sold more than 10 million copies.

58. The Wall....
... I was a big Pink Floyd fan up until The Wall. They used their considerable talents to create a record that is unrelentingly negative, depressing, without any redeeming qualities.

I remember thinking at the time - wow, if Roger Waters, one of the most successful musicians ever, with money, fame, and all that comes with it is this effing miserable, what chance do the rest of us have?

Now - to be sure, many acts have subsequently gone on to create even more chilling efforts, but that record sure turned me off of Floyd for a while. I much prefered the sardonic negativity of "Wish You Were Here" :)
