NBC signed Jay Leno to "The Tonight Show" this afternoon
It's up on tmz.com, which always seems to get the entertainment news before anyone else.

I'm a Conan fan. I hope he can escape the non-compete, and go somewhere else I can continue watching his show.

1. Conan has gotten royally shafted...
I hope NBC doesn't continue to screw him over and let him leave so he can move to another network. I hope Conan gets to move back to NYC too. The audience was better in NY.

2. That is royal BS, and I hope Jay crashes and burns.
NBC treated Conan terribly.

7. Apparently (and I have to cite the Internet on this one) if Leno got "The Tonight Show" back...
...then Conan O'Brien would immediately be free of his contract and walk away with a LOT of money. Like, many millions of dollars.

I have been, and always shall be, a big fan of Conan, and I hope he can find a home where they give him more than 7 months to get his show off the ground. Go Conan!

9. NBC's position is that Conan is refusing to work
and therefore they are free to find a new host for the Tonight Show. They believe that they could air The Tonight Show at 3AM and still meet the letter of the contract.

Fucking weasels.

10. And yet I don't get the feeling that Conan would not do his show.
He would tough it out until there was a resolution because he's a professional through and through. If NBC wants Jay Leno so badly, then I guess they can have him... And though it won't make much of a difference, I don't think my TV will ever again need to be tuned to NBC.

Fucking weasels indeed!

11. He's said that he won't host the show at midnight
Conan's position is that NBC is in breach: By moving the show out of its 11:34 slot, it's no longer the Tonight Show.

My personal preference would be for things go back to where they were seven months ago. I could go back to watching Letterman (or Colbert) at 11:30 and Conan at 12:30 if I'm up that late. There's a lot more freedom to do edgy humor at 12:30. 11:30 is just kind of blah. But then again, nobody asked me what I wanted.

8. I need a flow chart of late night television
Would be interesting to see all the swaps, changes, and shaftings.

My favorite and most under-talked about is Craig Ferguson. He is on constant shaft. :P

12. Zucker couldn't kill this network faster if he was deliberatly trying to.
Hell, maybe he is.

14. Zucker's four point strategery
1. First he killed comedy, losing the NBC franchise of Thursday night "Must See TV," where Seinfeld, Friends and Will & Grace once hilariously reigned;

2. then he killed drama, failing to develop successors to the formidable ER, West Wing, and Law & Order;

3. then he killed the 10 o'clock hour by putting Jay Leno on at a time when people expect to be told a story;

4. and then he killed late night by putting on a quirky redhead who did not have the bland mass-market appeal of Leno and who couldn't compete with the peerless late-night comedian NBC had stupidly lost 16 years ago, David Letterman.
