I was a little kid when this show was on.

The only thing about this show I can remember is the opening scene with the gun.

This is a bad western.

2. I like the show.
It is more of a drama show then a western.

I usually don't like westerns.

Ths shows seem well written.

Youtube has several episodes to watch also Hulu.

I know I watched the show but I don't remember any of the episodes.

3. Have Gun Will Travel
.
I listen to it on streaming oldtime radio online. The radio shows
were very good. Don't know about the radio actor's butt.
.
Gunsmoke radio shows were much better -- and there's 15 years or
more worth of the weekly shows online.
.
The old Jack Benny Show was a prime example of highly choreographed
anarchy -- seamless madness week after week after week.
.
Philip Marlowe shows are good. The Saint is pretty good, although
after being used to seeing Roger Moore on TV as The Saint, it's
difficult to accept the voice of Vincent Price as the same character.

6. Ahhh the radio.
We also listened to Superman, The Shadow, The Whistler, and the Lone Ranger along with some daytime shows about kids...something Armstrong the all American boy and some you mentioned. My father didn't believe in television so we didn't get one until I was around nine. We use to watch the neighbors tv from our window through theirs. Thank goodness for picture windows.

10. you know what tripped me out about the radio "Gunsmoke"?
William Conrad played Matt Dillon.
Yeah, this guy:

Face for radio all right

11. Terrific actor. Great radio voice too.
Besides starring in his own TV series, "Cannon", William Conrad was also the voice of the narrator on the Rocky and Bullwinkle series. He did the Dudley Doo-right segments with a higher pitched voice.

17. I agree about the voice.
.
He had an INCREDIBLE voice for the role of Matt Dillon -- one that
could take commmand of an untamed Western town.
.
But he simply wan't as physically imposing as James Arness, who
played the TV role. I didn't know about the narrator on Rocky
and Bullwinkle (still perhaps my favorite cartoon) and was very
surprised and delighted to find he was the voice of Dudley Doo-right.
Dudley is one of the few voices I can imitate well, and I could amuse
myself endlessly by telling Nell that I would save her. Conrad also
starred in "Jake and the Fat Man". He did not play "Jake".
.
The radio show was much darker and gritty than that on TV. Dillon
was haunted and brooding and sometimes dipped over into the unlawful
side of issues amd actually failed dismally at some of the heroics
he attempted. Miss Kitty, though it was NEVER definitively stated,
was definitely a saloon prostitute in the radio series instead of
the saloon OWNER she was portrayed as on television.

18. Welcome to DU.
I don't think I ever missed an episode of Gunsmoke when it was on radio. Recently I have been renting the Have Gun Will Travel DVDs on Netflix. William Conrad was also a Director and directed some episodes of Have Gun Will Travel on TV.

4. Opening theme is by Bernard Herrmann.
He wrote the music for all of those great Hitchcock movies. Many of the scripts were by (pre-Star Trek) Gene Roddenberry.

Only the first three seasons are on DVD and can be rented on Netflix. Season 4 will be released on DVD later this year.

It ran from 1957 - 1963 winning Emmys along the way for Best Western and Richard Boone for Best Actor.

Oh, I LOVED that show!

My husband and I used to watch that faithfully!

What was the actor's name? I don't remember, but he was great.

Very sexy...;-)

7. Richard Boone, he passed away in 1981.
I really wasn't paying attention to the tv but I thought I would watch one show.

The show was on encore for 24 hours, my aunt was taping them.

Now I am going to have to watch them.

Richard Boone was sexy.

I wouldn't have noticed it back then.

This show isn't the typical western.

9. Richard Boone..
I was twelve-seventeen for the run of this show (1957-63). I hated the show while everyone else loved it and never thought Boone was sexy although everyone else seemed to think he was. I would turn it on for a few minutes and then either leave the room or turn it off. Oh to be a teenager who didn't give a care what others thought or maybe I did. Perhaps I was too busy rebelling to ever go along with the crowd. :eyes:

Trust me Richard Boone had a nice butt in those black pants.

Now I need to go back and watch the tapes.

Now I need to make some popcorn, get some ice tea, and watch the tapes.

13. I was raised by 'puritan' parents, I would never have looked at
his butt in those days. That came later and after Richard Boone was no longer on tv. I probably only looked at his face. I'm not kidding. We were trained to be so goody two shoes.

To demonstrate my point. I was not allowed in the room when my mother changed my little brothers diapers because I was not allowed to see their wee-wees. :) We girls were kept painfully dumb as far as sex and what was considered sexy in males. I found it strange later in my life when visiting the Caribbean that the girls were made to always be fully clothed to protect their innocence but the boys ran around naked. I was raised that for a girl to remain innocent both sexes should be modestly clothed. I never saw my father without his shirt. Like I said in another post, I have never been a regular person. :eyes:

(Though I can't remember what he looked like.) I didn't like the show either. My parents loved westerns and watched them all but I just didn't like westerns. Still don't.

15. Thank you, I am no longer alone.
Like me, you must have been looking at his face. :)

I remember he had a long face with a lot of acne scars. I was a teenager then and he looked old to me.

My parents and older sisters watched westerns too, Gunsmoke, Wagon Train, Sugarfoot, Raw Hide, the Virginian and more. I don't think they watched 'Have Gun Will Travel" because he was a bounty hunter and the show was a little too edgy for my parents. My sisters may have watched him some.

32. He was the opposite of the pretty boy types who populated
westerns during that time, for example, the gorgeous Guy Madison. However, a draw of the series (no pun intended) was the fact Paladin was extremely sophisticated and enjoyed living the good life although he was a killer for hire.

20. That song was sung over the closing credits.
Ballad Of Paladin sung by Johnny Western, written by Johnny Western, Richard Boone and Sam Rolfe.

Opening theme was more dramatic, with Paladin pointing his gun at the camera. Written by Bernard Herrmann.

21. Theme song to Palladin
.
Thanks for the welcome, Graybeard.
.
That theme song was sung by the characters in "Stand by Me" as
they hiked along. It was a very popular show at the time depicted
in the movie. I learned today that it's one of the few TV shows
that inspired a radio show (rather than the other way around).
.
The definition of a paladin is "any determined advocate or
defender of a noble cause" -- the origin being the 12 champions
(the 12 paladins) in attendance on Charlemagne.
.
Wikipedia has Paramount planning a "Paladin" movie release this
year (though it's been delayed from 2008) with Paladin depicted
as a modern-day bounty hunter and starring (gulp) Eminem.
.
Yucko. On both the chronological setting and their choice of
actors to play Paladin.

22. Paladin looked really good climbing on his horse.
I have watched several episodes and I like the show.

My only question is how did he travel so fast.

First he would have to take a train, stage coach, or horse.

Travel wasn't that fast back then.

Paladin was good guy.

The show had some good writing.

Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army Revolver Caliber .45. This particular
gun is a rare collector's item and is, if you're interested, on sale for
$12,000.00. Sorry, only one per customer.

I loved it as a kid. I especially liked the first season when the theme music would come on every time Paladin would hand out his business card and the camera would show it.

Great show. It was the first time I had ever heard of "San Francisco."
