Worst movie ever on TCM now: Old Yeller.
I don't think I have ever recovered from the most odious, manipulative movie of all time from Disney: Old Yeller. Why did Disney air such a manipulative trap to an 8 year old? I consider it the worst movie of all time, because we trusted Disney. I was traumatized. Completely. He was a killer, no doubt about it. At least, I adopt unadoptable animals and give to many organizations because of that horrid movie. But it's unexcusable for TCM to show it.

1. It's based on a book. A good book.
I love the book and the movie.
I did the book with two separate groups of reading students (three boys, one girl) and all loved it. I showed them the movie afterwards.
Everybody enjoyed it.
I will always try and share it with students when I am able. I think it's a fantastic book.

6. They enjoyed the story. Of course it bothered them, but everybody understood it.
It's a part of life. He had to kill Yeller. Rabies is a horrible way to go.

3. I haven't read that book in ages, but I loved it as well
There was a sequel to the book as well, called Savage Sam, about Old Yeller's son ...

5. Oh please....
What was the kid supposed to do with a rabid dog? Allow it to suffer? Allow it infect the other animals or his family? There is no treatment for rabies; once symptoms begin, the disease is always fatal. It can be prevented, but not cured.

And it's a great fucking film, I'm Tivo-ing now.

I can check off my list of things that will never happen. "Number 876: Meet someone who didn't like 'Old Yeller.'"

13. On Old Yeller and my HOWDY-DO from puberty
....I grew up in a relatively small town in Michigan with two classic
little movie theatres right around the corner from each other in the
heart of the downtown area. When "The Graduate" (with Dustin Hoffman
and Anne Bancroft) was first released, I was right on the cusp of
puberty -- my hormones and libido already kicking at the walls of their
stalls.
...."Old Yeller" was playing at one theater and "The Graduate" at the
other. Whan my Mom dropped me and my buddy off for "Old Yeller", we
RACED around the corner and went in to see "The Graduate".
....When my friend's Mom dropped me off at home later, I headed RIGHT
straight up the stairs to my room. My mom called up, "How was the
movie?"
...."Fine. It was about some dog. REAL sad. I gottago abed now."
.
.
....I didn't actually see "Old Yeller" 'til about 5 years ago or so.
.
....And I STILL have a thing for Anne Bancroft.
.
...."Mrs. Robinson, you're trying to seduce me." ((she laughs)) "Aren't you?"
.
.
.
....Somewhat related note for the original poster: A friend of mine
was commuting daily to work about 20 miles away via the Interstate in
Pennsyvania. A woman two or three cars in front of him hit a deer and
he and about half-a-dozen people pulled over. The deer was horribly
mangled, bones sticking out all over its body, and quietly SCREAMING
in pain.
....My friend, a hunter, ran back to his car and got his hunting knife
out of the trunk of his car, ran back, and slit the deer's throat. It
died in about a minute or so... instead of potentially an hour or two
later after suffering from inconceivable agony.
....One of the onlookers started calling my friend "A MONSTER" for
having "killed" the poor deer.
....My friend just shook his head, walked back to his car, and continued
on to work.
.
.
No, I have never been a hunter.
And yes, I respect my friend for having enough courage and enough love to
do the best thing that could be done in a horrible situation.

14. We both saw it on listed on TMC. I said to my husband - I think it's almost child abuse
to have your little kid watch Old Yeller.

I said, remember your little skinny bony body heaving with sobs when they had to shoot Old Yeller?

God, a whole generation was traumatized by that movie.

20. There is nothing wrong with Heaven's Gate that another hour of film wouldn't fix
Divide it in two like Kill Bill maybe. OK, it was a mess. A classic example of grasp not equaling reach. But at least he was reaching.

They went nuts because he spent 40 million making it. That's two Tom Cruise movies without paying anyone other than Tom Cruise.

23. "Ishtar" has its moments.
Like at the end, when they kill Charles Grodin because he has rabies.

Seriously, the first act before they go to the middle east has some funny stuff and could have simply unfolded into an entertaining little movie about two struggling songwriters, but instead they decided to inexplicably go for the "fish out of water" thing with the CIA and all that stuff.
