BOOF! BOOF! BOOF!
The Boston Red Sox today acquired right-handed pitcher Boof Bonser from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for a player to be named later. The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein.

Bonser, 28, missed the 2009 season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery in February to repair partial tears to the labrum and rotator cuff in his right shoulder. The right-hander made one rehabilitation appearance on September 6 for the Twins Single-A Fort Myers affiliate, tossing 1.0 scoreless frame.

Selected by the San Francisco Giants in the first round (21st overall) of the 2000 First-Year Player Draft, Bonser has made 96 Major League appearances (60 starts) over parts of three seasons with the Twins (2006-08). He is 18-25 with a 5.12 ERA (223 ER/391.2 IP), compiling 317 strikeouts compared to 125 walks. Bonser made one start for Minnesota during the 2006 Division Series vs. Oakland, throwing 6.0 innings of two-run ball in a no-decision.

1. Boof appears to be kind of mediocre
He doesn't walk too many people, but that's the only bright spot I can see in the numbers.

the horizontal bop there in Bean Town. The only time you guys are going to see him is when it's the 4th inning and you are losing 15 to 2.

7. I got a feeling he's either going to AAA or a warm body for ST...
and that's about it. If he shows something, great...if not, they'll break camp without him. I'd put the odds he'll be in Boston next year at about 25%.

9. Then why trade for him to begin with?

11. We have a lack of arms at AAA...

also it's low-risk, potentially high reward. He used to be a decent prospect but he never really developed into a solid MLB player. If we end up cutting him, he costs us some paltry sum of money, maybe $100K. If he develops, again...great. They clearly saw something there that made them go "hmmm", they make a lot of these trades and signings yearly though...most don't work out.

The Twins motivation was to free up a roster spot on the 40 man before the Rule-V draft today.

6. Be good to the Boofinator! I'm sorry Minnesota didn't keep him.
He was an OK middle reliever. But yeah, his name is Boof.

10. And we may still get Beltre.
And the Bay drama continues.

Boof is a good addition, though.
