2. Modern? Might I remind you of The Love Boat?
All of the "great" sitcoms from the 50's and 60's were driven by laugh tracks. The signal to noise ratio of TV is pathetic! It isn't worth the time, much less the expense.

9. OH BULLSHIT! The entire SCRIPT was based on the laugh track!
I've known some silly ass people, but NONE who laughed like the idiots on I Love Lucy!

16. No, they wrote the script with (LAUGH TRACK) after every other line.
If you take out the laugh tracks, it isn't really all that funny. Okay, Lucy's eyeball things are funny, but other than that, you know what I mean.

4. The problem is that the Simpson's have done everything,
and everything was done before the Simpson's. I prefer Nat-Geo, and the Science Chanel, but even they can have moments of stupidity.

10. But you got to admit
it looks great in HD. A hundred and ninety-seven channels and nothing worth watching.

14. Oh god the commercials are the absolute worst. Thank god for DVDs.
There's plenty of good shows on TV though - here's a few I can name:

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Dollhouse
Dexter
Monk
Psych
Fringe
Sons Of Amarchy
30 Rock

17. The themes of the 50's, 60's and 70's were iconic
If someone asked me to figure out a show from a theme today, I would fail miserably

19. Song writers with a sense of hooks and catchy melodies would have to exist for that to happen.
You are right- old TV themes were instantly recognizable and often as important as the show itself.

18. Yup- and writers are too lazy to write a self contained story.
Edited on Sat Oct-24-09 03:46 PM by Dr Fate
You used to get a brand new, 1 hour or 1/2 hour plot every week. A self contained story that could draw you in, even if you never saw the show b/f.

Now-a-days they can stretch what passes for a "plot" over a whole season- and no gurnatee of resolution even then. If you have not seen the past 5 episodes, you dont even know what is going on.

I think it's more challenging to write self contained, 1 hour stories- anyone can tell a story if they have freaking 20 episodes to do it.

Thank god for Netflix- I've been exploring the old shows from the 50's & 60's- and the writing is just better.
