I'm in the mood for a guitar solo--post your favorite please
if it's you think it's better than this from John Petrucci (in his Ibanez days) post it!
(tell me the famous band he references to prove you actually listened to it, and I'll listen to yours.)

The more over the top and self-indulgent the better.

1. Nice reference
I was just thinking the other day how I don't have "Revolver " in CD. That was a nice echo of "Tomorrow Never Knows"

Now, One of my favorite solos is pure psychedelia- Robbie Krieger on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2NgNxbXIqU">"When The Music's Over" starts at 2:52
short but sweet

4. "Tomorrow Never Knows," huh? hmm.
Well, I asked for the band, not the song. You got that on the money. (unless I'm missing the Tomorrow Never Knows in that solo, I was thinking that what George sang, Petrucci is playing on guitar. Different album.)

Ah, "When The Music's Over" such an up front great guitar sound for 1967. That's awesome. Somewhere, 1500 miles away, in my dad's house I have the LP.

5. I didn't want to give away the band because I was the 1st response
so I left clues w/o saying "Beatles" but it would only fool someone under 25 I think.

52. Isn't that the point of what I said?
That the song I was talking about was on a different album, i.e., not Revolver (Tomorrow Never Knows), but LHCB.

Everything I write makes sense to me, anyway.

7. And I dreaded that you were going to post SRV playing LW
nothing wrong with that, it's a conventional choice.

So, you post me a Steve Vai vid, and you weren't familiar with Petrucci? For Shame!

(lol at the hater comments for the Vai vid. Jeebus, youtube is always amusing.)

Vai has done better things, however. For the Love of God is the best guitar instrumental. Period.

And I'm a firm Satch man.

Here Vai plays it coming in from crowd surfing in Zagreb! (better quality versions exist, but this is fun)

I didn't like that. Self-indulgent, yes. Over the top? Not really. Kinda sloppy all around. Was he drunk?

If you want a fill in guitarist that gives an over the top Deep Purple performance, check out Joe Satch:

It's a song that is personally one of the best because it reminds me of rushing to FLA to see my mom before she passed on...

The song came on the radio about three miles before we hit the hospital and I knew I would never talk to my mom again...

He just plays such melodic solo lines, no big tricks or being really fast, just great melodies...

53. Fred Frith in the Art Bear's "Rats and Monkeys", 1979.
He also plays bass and violin.

"Rats and monkeys crowd the city as it comes into ruin. Boards are loosening, true, but gates are locked."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfXu9jXmgYo

"Rats and Monkeys" is a hyperkinetic rush of sound and beats. Nothing on the rest of the album approaches this kind of intensity, and you'd be hard pressed to find any other music from the time that sounded like this. Not punk, not prog, but pounding, relentless, and at light speed. Krause's protagonist warns of vermin infesting the city repeatedly, and just when you think you're out of the woods, Frith and Cutler come back with a furious coda, and then explode into nothing. Breathless, in a word.
