Then it turns out, they're a complete stranger and they've dialed the wrong number? How long have you carried on such a conversation before either of you figured out that neither of you was talking to the person you thought you were talking to?

I just got a call here at work that I thought was from one of my clients. Turns out she wasn't I talked to her for nearly 10 minutes. Gotta love it when people don't bother to identify themselves...

1. My story
About 10 years ago, I came home and found a bunch of messages on my answering machine. Around the third message in of about five, this woman's voice came on and she proceeded for about 10 minutes to explain to either her husband or boyfriend "Dan" why she wanted him to take her back. You could hear kids crying in the background. She kept apologizing. There was no way I could call her back and I didn't have caller id and she left no name or number.

The odd thing is that I had a somewhat lengthy machine message. "Hi, you've reached the Smith family and the XXX office of the Portland Daily Herald. Please leave your name and number and the best time to get back to you. Thanks and have a great day."
