DUers who got harassed, beaten, and endured a living hell in public school...
when going to college after HS graduation, did you see your grades go up?

Mine were significantly better when I went in 1991... and higher than my wildest dreams would have ever contemplated today.

Maybe it's because I left a hellish environment and put into others where learning was possible...

Pity I can't sue the demonic fuckers from my childhood... /editorializing

Bullying me quickly became a risky enterprise

2. Mr Scorpio there's actually something to that
My daughter gave her bully a kick to the face last year. I was upset about it but more people than not said..."Good for her!" From what I've heard she's had no more problems with this bully.

3. Damn skippy
Fuck with the bull, you get the horns. That's the only response a bully will understand.

6. She's lucky she didn't get expelled
When I was in school that might have worked, but in a lot of places, under zero tolerance it's an automatic 10 day suspension and review for expulsion - even if you didn't throw the first punch and fought back only in self-defense.

It puts some kids in a situation where their only choices are be bullied or be forced out of the school.

7. She got two days detention
Both girls got detention for fighting. I wasn't happy about it but it was self defense on my daughter's part, luckily no one was hurt badly. Apparently this girl tackled her to the ground and in the ensuing struggle my daughter gave her a boot to the face.

Atmosphere of impunity.

5. Yes, although I realized since I was still being treated badly in college that I had
stuck a neon sign over my head that said, "Victimize me." Once I was able to start learning how to take the sign down and ignore other people things improved a bit. But since I was an improperly diagnosed bipolar person, I had frequent problems of other kinds.

8. I hated school, I was bullied some in elementary and jr high and by high school
Edited on Mon Sep-07-09 05:42 PM by carlyhippy
no one messed with me because I hated everyone and let them know it. Public school screwed me up big time, it's too bad...took alot of years to get over it. I didn't go to college because of this.

I read in Rolling Stone magazine an interview with Eminem and he said that public school screwed him up big time because of being bullied. Another interview recently in RS with Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20 said that he was bullied in hs. Some studies, real true accurate studies, need to be done about bullying in the nations' public schools and how it affects the children now and follow up years later.

9. I almost failed and was almost expelled
In college I am doing fantastic.

Here is the difference.
In high school, I would just leave and they would bitch. In college I just leave and my professors think its awesome that I don't have to be in class and can still do the work.
In High school you get busy work homework and I wouldn't do it. In college my professors think it is awesome that I don't do homework and can still understand the material and pass tests.
High school teachers try to act authoritarian to keep people in line who don't want to be there. In college, only people who want to be there show up, so professors don't act like mini hitlers.

WTF is wrong with our public schools. Everyone has a tale of abuse, neglect, or discrimination. They are an absolute failure.

10. Mine went up about a half point (out of 4)
I attribute it mostly to having more control over my curriculum.

11. I was the second shortest guy in
a high school full of rednecks. About half way through my freshman year I started letting them know that if they wanted a fight they could have one and they better fucking kill me because it would be a fight that would never end. Fuck with somebody half your size there ain't no rules. That backed 'em up.

Of course that and bad parenting led to a case of "little guy syndrome" and I started bullying and using people bigger than me. It took about a ten years to learn better. I didn't discover what a jerk I was until I was about twenty five. I'm not particularly proud of it.

Violence begets violence. Hate fosters hate. Those seeds sprout for a long time.

15. It's no where near as bad in the HS I teach in compared to the one I went to.
I think white kids in general are more socially competitive--to the point of being cut throat--than Hispanic kids, who are the vast majority where I teach. And really, high school was nothing compared to hell that was middle school (we called it Jr. High back then) But the shit still is worst in 8th grade. I'm over the opinion that all 8th graders should be cryogenically frozen and not thawed out until their hormones subside.

18. I was pretty much an honor student through high school
But I didn't get the sick feeling attending college classes that I did going to school every day as a kid. I missed ALOT of school growing up mostly because of the nastiness of the kids. Never got beat up, but I endured lots of emotional abuse at the hands of the other kids, mostly other girls.
I was almost 30 the first time I attempted higher education and I remember it being exhilarating for the most part. I wish that my high school years had been that fun and exciting.
