DU computer gurus! Need help changing type of file.
The file is in Rich Type and needs to be in HTM or HTML. We are trying to submit a resume to a website that requires it. Is there any way of doing this?

2. Open it up in Word
then do a save as and change the file type to HTML (see it at the bottom of the dialog box).

4. We don't have Word. We have Abiword (a free word processing program).
I tried doing that in Abiword but HTM was not an option in the little box. My only options are Rich Text, Text Document, Text document - MS-DOS format, or unicode text document. Will any of those work for HTM?

6. Doesn't AbiWord has a save-as option?
I'm pretty sure it does. Can't you just save it as HTML?

8. I did that. I highlighted the document, went to save as and then tried to change
the file type in the little box at the bottom. See above for my choices. HTM wasn't one of them so I was wondering if one of them would somehow "work" as HTM or include it...

9. Hmm

Okay, see the problem is that without having your document formatted in HTML code, it's not going to show up properly in a browser. That means that everything on your resume needs to be nested inside HTML tags. If you knew how to code HTML, you could write the whole thing in a text editor and simply save it as an HTML file.

Since you don't, my advice is to go get a simple WYSIWYG HTML editor and re-create your resume as an HTML document.

What is your Operating system?

EDIT: Or, you could send it to me and I can turn it into an HTML file

13. Just sent his resume. It was fine except headings for some reason were not centered.
Maybe they'll be centered in HTML...

Can't thank you enough. We are both so grateful to you for any help you can provide. Let me know if I need to do something else.

You are so kind, like so many DUers...

15. Not sure if this was solved ...

So, I'll offer some thoughts.

Abiword does supporting saving in html format, but you need the plugins.

http://www.abisource.com/download/plugins.phtml

http://www.abisource.com/download/

Even without that, in order to do the thing with Google Docs mentioned above, you'd simply have to save it in a format Google Docs does support, e.g. "Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx), Rich Text (.rtf), OpenDocument Text (.odt) and StarOffice (.sxw)." That is, if you've got a .rtf file saved, upload that, not the one in Abiword's own format.

If for some reason it's not accepting the .rtf file type, try saving the document as a .doc file and then upload it.
