Noel Gallagher leaves Oasis over fallout with brother
LONDON, England (CNN) -- Oasis front man Noel Gallagher has quit the rock group after a fallout with his bandmate brother, he announced late Friday.

"It's with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight," Noel Gallagher said in a brief statement on the band's Web site. "People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer."

Noel Gallagher is the band's lead guitarist and songwriter, and Liam Gallagher is the lead singer.

The band is currently on a European tour for its album, "Dig Out Your Soul." Noel Gallagher apologized to fans who had bought tickets for upcoming gigs in France, Germany and Italy.

Could it be, at last, the end of Oasis?

Why do Americans loathe Oasis so much? The band's arrogance and Beatles pretensions don't really explain it...Oasis are hardly the first rockers to commit such sins. I imagine it has more to do with not knowing their tunes, only the tabloid headlines. Anyways, it amuses me to see the conniptions stateside against the band, like the one above, but we'll always have the music.

2. I love their arrogance
Give me Oasis' arrogance over phony U2- and Coldplay-style goodie two shoes bullshit any day.

More innovation than imitation..and despite their rep, Oasis was always positive about life in their songs.

Thanks for the tunes and memories!

5. It is clearly imitative, but does it sound like the Beatles?
No, it doesn't. They took other sounds and made new ones. Isn't that the story of rock?

10. Other British bands have made huge splashes here like Prodigy, Coldplay, even Radiohead.
But Oasis never did. Their US tours were usually disasters, due to feuding, and they always had limited airplay. I think because the Beatles are such sacred cows here, Oasis seemed like pale posers in comparison.

I do not begrudge people their right to hate the band, but it must be understood how significant Oasis is beyond our shores, whatever your personal tastes may be. In that sense, hatred of Oasis reflects our provincialism. Few Americans understand how important Oasis has been over the years.

Poll after poll in Great Britain regarding the greatest albums of all time cite BOTH Definitely Maybe and What's the Story Morning Glory in the top ten. They must have touched someone somewhere at sometime, just not here in the states.

11. Let's not confuse popularity with artistic significance.
The two can coincide, but one isn't an indicator of the other.

I believe David Hasselhoff had a number one hit at one point.

14. Of course not.
He was just the first person to play one on a rock record.

That wouldn't have happened if he'd been busy plundering emulating popular music from thirty years before his time.

15. Rock music is, in great part, pastiche.
Edited on Sat Aug-29-09 03:05 PM by mix
The Beatles and Oasis are alike in that sense.

You don't think the Beatles were plundering themselves? What about the influence of early American rock and its country and blues elements? This shows up most clearly on Let It Be. Check out "One After 909":

Lennon's sound experiments were also influenced by Stockhausen, another "plundering."

The difference is in the Beatles' ability to synthesize their influences into an original and lasting statement.

I guess we'll see where the Gallagher's music stands in thirty years.

25. They're acknowledged to be very good, yet they're not part of 'popular culture' the
way, say, The Police were or U2 and Coldplay are.

There are probably folks that confuse them with Motorhead.

I think Radiohead should be FAR more popular over here than they are or I would expect them to be.

Maybe you judge music differently than I do, though.

31. I"m sorry, I seriously doubt that anyone will be playing their music
decades from now, with the frequency with which the Beatles' songs are still played.

I don't hate them, they are a good band, but not of that endlessly memorable caliber IMHO.
