Belle and Sebastian....
I really like this band, but honestly there is quite simply no more emasculating band for a guy to listen to than Belle and Sebastian. I'm talking even worse than simply listening to artists or bands that have more typically female audiences. B & S just has such an airy, light as a feather, twee folky sound that makes me feel like the poofiest most frail man alive. They write some great tunes and I enjoy everything about them. But man, I sure as heck don't roll down my car window and turn up the stereo when I'm listening to them.

1. Yet they're from Glasgow.
One of the world's wimpiest bands from one of the world's hardest cities. That's a little bizarre, isn't it.

I feel obliged to point out that they formed in the pub below my old flat in Glasgow. I always point that out, like it's relevant, or something.

2. belle and sebastian are great
When I first listened to Belle and Sebastian I really couldn't stand them. I think I hated them. I'm a girl, but I usually don't like more visceral sounding music, myself.0 But, it stuck in my head.

Then, I started to listen to them a little more. By week 3, I was in love with them. Then, started to listen to Belle and Sebastian all the time. Strange. Everything you'd hate in another band, is everything you love about Belle and Sebastian. Anyways, It could be just that I'm getting older. :-)

3. Belle and Sebastian are awesome
But then I also love stuff like "Sex and the City". Perhaps I'm just a pussywhipped emasculated liberal :)

I'll agree that B&S's appeal to a male folk rock audience is slightly diminished by various allusions to their geekiness and frequent unnecessary female back-up vocals. The latter is a problem for a lot of great artists, most notably Leonard Cohen, while the former is part of B&S's charm. But as a relatively masculine and straight guy it is more difficult for me to identify with B&S then say Bob Dylan.

But I still love B&S.

8. ain't nothing wrong with B&S...
...in fact their new album ranks with "boy with the arab strap" as one of thier best.

i blame "high fidelity" (a movie and book that i LOVE) for giving B&S this reputation of being slight and anti-masculine.

but i just bought an old copy of labelle's "nightbirds" so what the hell do i know about masculinity and music?

9. The Boy With The Arab Strap...........

is a great album.......too bad that in High Fidelity they chose Seymour Stein (the only crap song on the whole album or at least the only song I don't like from that album)........
