but get a dog. Seriously though, a dog is a loyal companion that can fill a hole in your life. I have been alone most of my life (although often I do not mind being alone, because books and computers are often better friends than people) without very many friends, much less a girlfriend, and it has been much, much less lonely since I got a dog 13 years ago. It wasn't any fun when the young one died or even the older one, and it can be costly over time, but I think it helps.
