Poll question: Regarding knives
in the dishwasher. Blade side up or blade side down?

1. blade down
I myself do not have a dishwasher, but when I am at my brother's house, he and his wife have kids, I always put them blade down when helping with the dishes. It seems safer. Call me crazy.

2. Good knives should only be hand-washed.
Cutlery knives go blade-down.

4. agree with the handwash on good knives
I put blades up/handles down in the machine. (have a few stab holes in my hands but I feel like it keeps the blades in better shape) Spoons and forks too - handles down, unless they are very slim and might go through the basket, blocking the spray arm.

6. REAL knives like cooks knives shouls be hand washed and dried
carefully. I have several that are over 100 years old, carbon steel, hickory handles with brass rivets. They still take a better edge than any new knife I have.

8. Good knives should be hand washed
and dried immediately after use. Those were the instructions on my Henkels I got for my birthday.

Other knives put in the dish washer should always be facing down. There have been cases where children have tripped and fallen (while running in the house) onto the open dishwasher and died from falling onto upward facing knives.

9. Typical kitchen knives-face down...
Sweetie's $200 special knife gets hand washed and paper towel dried.

My "hunting"* knives--they never get very dirty trimming weeds or cutting boxes, but they get a coat of oil and put away.

*I don't actually hunt.
