1. Various things, including the "Growl", the "Death Growl", and just "vocals,"
as opposed to "clean vocals," which are singing with a recognizably human voice. We also call it "Cookie Monster." :D

The really interesting thing about this sound, for me? I know of a few underground metal bands with woman vocalists who do this sound, and....one cannot tell the difference. At all. It is a truly gender-neutral vocal style, which is not easy to find in any music anywhere in the world.

As a female headbanger, this pleases me. :headbang:

10. Deathklok is originally a cartoon band, yes.
Google "Metalocalypse," that's the actual name of the show. It's a fucking riot - but it's a riot because it pokes loving fun at tropes that have been in the metal scene for 25 years.

Thank you so much for the answer............. I've never gotten how serious it's sposed ta be, going with all the leather/stud/tat/shaved/eyeliner stuff.

IT'S GOT TO BE A JOKE RIGHT? I put up the punk rock thread this week that was a wayback trip to when there was a lot of humor in punk. Rob Zombie initiated this metal/vomit schtick........... I just wonder how serious people who are listening/making it are. It makes me laugh. Not AT them, but gawd, isn't it HIlarious?

Listening to the college station, just played "Gorecore" or something and joking it sounded like "Arnold Schwarzenegger on vocals."

24. People had problems with...
...Geoff Tate and Rob Halford back in the 80's. "Why are they singing with such high voices?" "Is this some kind of joke?" "How can anybody like this shit?" Johnny Cash. Bob Dylan. Tom Petty. Hell, half my parents' generation can't stand Tony Bennett. TONY BENNETT, fer-krice-sakes!

Don't like the new stuff? Don't worry. It'll be old-school soon enough.

Just repeat after me:

1. These kids today, with their hair and their clothes!

2. You call that music? Why, back in my day there was music you could understand!

3. For the last time, get the hell off my frickin' lawn!

I used to listen to Slayer, Anthrax, and Metallica when they where speed metal, back in the 80's. I still respect hardcore metal even though i rarely listen to it anymore but the growling and vomiting sounds just annoy the hell out of me. Maybe I'm just an old fart now.

One of my fave covers of all times is the Who's 'Boris The Spider' as done by the Accused. Spped/Thash Metel, 'vomit' vocals and if your at all familiar with the song you will be rofl-yer-ao! Now that's funny! (It's a pity that there is not likely a youtube example to play for you but this my space link will give you an idea what the band sounds like).

34. This thread isn't complete without a Carcass song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNKl1KqmFeI&feature=related

These bands take the music composition very seriously, but usually not themselves. In talking to a lot of these guys I found that they are very funny, very tongue in cheek in their approach to music. There's no way you write a song called Crepitating Bowel Erosion in total seriousness. A lot of these guys (especially from the older bands) have wives, kids, a mortgage. They're normal in every way until they start playing music.

I listen to a ton of black metal, and that's where the guys tend to take themselves way too seriously (though more and more bands/artists are shunning the dogma associated with the scene, thankfully). I could live without the corpse paint look, and I refuse to spell cult "kvlt".

Edited on Sat Jul-18-09 07:26 PM by chknltl
Their shows are a work of art, an art appreciated by those with...um... well here's a link to their myspace page. http://www.myspace.com/churchofhate
(My fave song, listenable here, is a little butt waggin' toe tappin' ditty called, "Mouth Full Of Broken Teeth").

Each one of these characters is married (or seriously attached) with kids. They do take their music seriously but truth be told-(and they utterly hate it when I say this)-they are the nicest guys you'd ever want to invite home for a Thanksgiving diner with the relatives! Onstage though is an entirely different, gooey bloody matter. They've been accused of being racist but that is not a truism of these guys. Musically they are equal opportunity haters-hating the racist just as much as they hate women or the Pope. It's their shtick musically but it is in no way a representation of who these guys really are.

Edited on Sat Jul-18-09 02:38 PM by old mark
who had a relative hit called "Death Walks Behind You", which I beleve may have been the first such song. There wre many metal bands that did not do this type of music, but AR seems to be the first to use that combination. It didn't seem to be very fast, though - not thrashing.

36. Hey omega minimo here's a nice lass who can sing vomit vocals
Clearly the post of a fanboy but who knows, perhaps you may come to like this band as I do. I confess that I first found this band intriguing because here was a gal who could thrash with the best of 'em. That vocal style is hard on the throat though and over the years this singer has gotten away from them. Here is a bit of a historic look-through if you like, demonstrating the vocal style of Gen, singer for the Genitorturers.

I do not care for this vid but it does demonstrate those early vomit vocals Gen could do which first attracted me to her band. Not really thrash metal, actually better called death metal, I think this song is from '91 0r '92. Gen is seen in the first thirty seconds of this odd vid.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCbQt3HpuNg&feature=quicklist

'Sin City', recorded in the mid '90s gets away from the death metal style and gets closer to mainstream rock, here is the title cut which imho absolutely RAWKS!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vxh3WG5IApU&feature=related That song is followed by 'Terrorvision', more straight forward rock with Gen's usual 'evil' flavor, here she brings back those 'vomit vocals' in parts of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGFRQPDac2Q

Finally here is 'Cum Junkie', one of Gen's more recent hits. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4ee0OpQOO8 The vid for 'Cum Junkie' needs to play a bit but trust me, the quality improves to near perfection after the opening 'theatrics' and you'll get to see Gen performing live-which imo is quite the treat. Content aside, this song is almost pop rock, long gone are those vomit vocals.

42. Half way through links and highly offended
by don rickles comment "...and you want to know why they lost the war." I had to stop watchin that train-wreck right then and there! Ya know, I never thought much of mr. rickles style of humor one way or the other, he IS talented, I appreciate that but this coment...and that smug attitude...I can only hope it was one of those moments for him that we all have, you know the one where we wish that we could go back in time and restate something we know was in PISS POOR taste.

FWIW this is my first exposure to Nina Hagen, (I guess I don't get out much huh), I can't decide if I like her music so far, but I'd be honored to have her as a friend or a neighbor or as someone to have worked with-ok I'd have LOVED to have had the chance to have photographed her at her gigs. When I did photography of local musicians, I always preferred artists who brought more to the stage than their music. (which is why the Genetorturers were my fave band to shoot). Nina Hagen is a visual feast and definitely an artist I would have done anything to have been able to shoot!

logging off for the night, I am bookmarking this because I want to see those other links, thanks for turning me on to Ms Hartley
