Spotted dick sounds nasty.
I was looking at English food and I saw this and it sounds icky. Spotted dick is a steamed suet pudding containing dried fruit (usually currants), commonly served with either custard or butter and brown sugar.Eww!

17. I have bought that in a local store
I think it ended up in someone's Christmas stocking. I also used to be able to get Darkie toothpaste with the blackface logo here (until the law came down on the company).

24. OMG
We saw and had to buy that back in the 70's either in Taiwan or Japan, now I can't remember. It was so fascinating. So it was available here in the US?!!!:wow:

27. you mean the toothpaste?
It was in Chinatown in Toronto. In fact they still sell the more politically correct version now which is no fun at all. Had I known all this stuff was going to disappear I would have saved one for myself. I mentioned it to a Chinese friend who explained the sense of the logo matter-of-factly, how their teeth were very white against black skin. Couldn't understand how anyone might see this as racist. A young guy who had been in Canada most of his life, though pretty well insulated in a Chinese community.

29. yes Darkie toothpaste
top hat and all? it must have been Taipei if your source was Chinese. Oh how I wish I still had it. I have some fun packages in the bathroom and that would fit perfectly.

What does the more PC version look like?

32. It was in a local store here - I bought it right on my street

My Chinese source was not the source of the toothpaste. I just brought it to him and asked him if this could possibly be for real, and yes it was and very widely used in Asia and it was clear he saw nothing wrong with it.

In fact quite a few stores in Chinatown carried it and probably still do. Very popular toothpaste. I can't remember what the PC version is though I remember seeing it in my local drugstore not too long ago so I will make a point of taking a close look with an eye to reporting. The Chinese characters for the original sold in China translated as "Black Man Toothpaste" I am told. Here of course it appeared in the export English translated version.

Yes the Cock Soup and Darkie Toothpaste were both among my Kensington Market/Chinatown prizes. Other things I collected but could not buy were company names - the classic Wing On Funeral Home or the Wong Wei Moving Company, the first of which is less than 2 blocks away and Wong Wei trucks I used to see all the time but not for a while.

First big wave (though not the first) of Chinese immigration came from Hong Kong - people with money getting out before China took possession. So their sources would likely have been there. But when Chinese emigrated, so did Darkie toothpaste.

5. Spotted Dick really isn't that bad at all.
I'd go with the custard, skip the butter & brown sugar. Also avoid those Heinz tins of Spotted Dick. Make fresh if you're really going to try it - oh and add plenty of fruit.

8. Even though Jamie Oliver will defend his country's cooking...
English Cuisine is still an oxymoron.

Seriously, I lived 5 years in London, from 1974 to 1979, and the only thing that saved me were the Indian restaurants on every corner. Albeit, back then most Americans didn't understand vegetarianism, whereas Brits got it straight away!

10. The quality is better now, but the food is still pretty bland.
And to be fair, most of the Indian cuisine in England is Anglo-Indian - Chicken Tikka Masala is believed to be a Scottish invention.

26. Spotted Dick is actually delicious.
I wouldn't trust the canned Heintz variety...but a properly steamed home made suet pudding studded with raisins, currants, whatever and bathed in whipped cream is really splendid.
I went to a girl's college (a thousand years ago) and had an English housemother who clearly encouraged the kitchen in the house to produce these lovely English steamed puddings...including Jam Sponge (Spotted Dick without the spots and smothered in preserves and cream) and a dark chocolate steamed pudding that was served with whipped cream and hot fudge sauce. Oh My God. Have you heard of the "Freshman Fifteen?" That's the fifteen pounds that every Freshman gained during the first year. Worth every ounce.
