Poll question: What scares you more, animals of the land or sea?
Edited on Tue Jul-14-09 01:32 PM by mix
For me, it is the predatory animals of the sea...growing up in SoCal by the ocean, one realizes that water is still not an area of nature completely dominated by humankind...on land, in most inhabited areas, even rural ones, predatory animals have been eliminated or nearly so.
VOTE! (please :hi: )

1. Gotta go with the Sea Critters....
When I'm hiking, I seldom think about running into bears or mountain lions- though it's a distinct possibility. But for some reason, when snorkeling or swimming in the ocean- the thought of a shark usually comes to my mind. Not that it stops me, but.... I think getting taken out by a shark would truly be an awful way to go.

4. Depends....
As long as I'm on land, I'm really not scared of sea creatures at all. Heck, Gimme ten feet of space above water, and I bet I could take a Great White. :silly:

6. Humans.
Seriously, I'm no where near an ocean and the odds of running into any non-human land predators around here is pretty slim.

34. Completely agree - whether I'm backpacking or scuba diving, the biggest
risk is always other humans doing something stupid or malicious. (Except sometimes, the biggest risk is me doing something stupid...)

8. Sea, simply because I am terrified of drowning.
If I had to choose my death from one of the two, I'd rather be torn to bits than drown.

12. not sure why, although I was stung by a buckmoth caterpillar when i was young
(fell down from a tree onto my neck, no less) but I am positive I was still handling caterpillars after that. At some point I just got panicky about them. If someone picks one up I get really irrational and strt yelling for them to get away from me and I try to get as far away as possible. I can disassociate and know that I am being irrational, even kind of viewing the scene from another position, but I can't overcome the fear and touch one or trust the other person to not put it on me. weird.

17. I'm terrified of those animals who live on land and sail the seas -- humans.
They can be vicious!

I wouldn't want to stumble across something like this:

28. Land animals for three reasons...
1. It's pretty easy to avoid the ones at sea. Don't end up floating in the ocean.

2. Land animals include some pretty horrific bugs.

3. The most dangerous land animals--bears--are ungodly killing machines according to the Colbert.
