Kings 7/11 (spoilers in first post)
Anyone see the episode "Javelin" last night?

This was my favorite episode thus far... The end of the episode was quite dramatic, and I was shocked and stunned when Silas yelled to Jack

"You are no prince, you FAGGOT!"

I don't think I've ever heard that word on network TV... It was so devastating to hear a father hurl that epithet at his only son.

I HATE NBC for canceling this brilliant show!

1. No doubt the religious reich is pressuring NBC to dump the show.
They're probably "offended" that its not a strict retelling of the Biblical account.

Of course if it WAS a strict retelling, the gay prince (whose name should be Jonathan and not Jack) would be doing David (1 Samuel 18), and not the guy who his mom had taken out last week. And his father (who should be named Saul rather than Silas) actually said "you son of a perverse woman" rather than "faggot", but it was in the context of the king not approving of his sexual relationship with David, so the intent was pretty much the same.

NBC, sadly has a track record of caving into pressure from the religious wackos. They had an animated show called "God, The Devil, and Bob" which disappeared in the first month, because of the animated God character. And there was another show that vanished even sooner. I don't even remember the name, but it was about a priest who would pray while driving his car, and Jesus appeared in his passenger seat to talk to him.

Never saw anything remotely offensive in either show myself, but then (unlike the AFA and other such wackjobs) I've actually read the Bible.

4. It's made me want to dig out my mom's Bible & read the relevant OT books
Some might think the show is slow, but I like the way it's unfolding & the allusions to the OT.

6. I can't decide if I want to get familiar with the biblical King David...

Do I read the Old Testament now? Or, should I wait until the show's over?

2. Wonder why someone would "unrecommended" this topic?
Edited on Sun Jul-12-09 08:02 PM by targetpractice
I simply started a thread about a show that is discussed often in the DU Lounge... Seems sort of mean-spirited for someone to unrecommend the thread without posting feedback.

The "unrecommend" option seems like an ill-conceived feature to me. I'm a product manager and usability consultant... So, I speak with some expertise...

First, "unrecommend" isn't even a real word... If the admins were looking looking for a label that means the opposite of the verb "recommend" they might try "suppress" or "disparage" instead. However, those concepts are too negative... Yet, that's exactly the nature of the "feature." Watering down the label doesn't wash away the nastiness of the functionality.

Anyways... My feelings are hurt after getting my first "unrecommendation" because I don't know why I deserve it. Does someone not like Kings, the latest episode, my post, or me? I can't tell because of the complete lack of useful information conveyed by an anonymous "unrecommendation."

I've been meaning to write a long post about this... but was too lazy... Maybe I will now that I've been stung.

3. Wow, I thought I was the only one in America watching this show
I missed last night's episode, but will catch it on On Demand. Headed there right now to keep my brain from committing suicide over the stupidity that is Big Brother.....

8. I'm ranking it up there with Battlestar Galactica...
...as far as writing, acting, and direction for a drama.
