56. You'll LOVE this story about Mr. Hell...
when he appeared in the movie "Smithereens," it was shown at a local Norfolk art/movie theatre. It was shown only as a midnight show.

So, Richard's mother and her husband - who was in the USN at an impressionable age and never lost the Navy haircut and wore the black 'birth control' Navy issue glasses - go to the midnight show.

They do not fit in with the rest of the audience members. A young woman in front of them finally turns around and says, "Hey, what are you guys doin' here?" She proudly says, "I am Richard Hell's mother." The young woman replied, "Yeah? Well, what's his REAL NAME?" "His real name is 'Richard Meyers'." "OH MY GOD! It's Richard Hell's mother!!!!"

She had his album cover art, etc. proudly displayed in her office at the university and one day, an older woman who was a student came in and said, "I always knew people like that had mothers, I just never thought I'd meet one."

LOL :spray: Thanks, Captain Hilts. One of your brushes with greatness! Great story.

51. Does he come from money?
I have wondered that for quite awhile due to the fact that he can still afford to live in NYC with no visible means of support.
Blank Generation is a great record, but the royalties on it must be minuscule or nonexistent.

And his mom should be proud of him.

55. No. His parents were both academics. They met in college - at Columbia,
and did grad work at UKentucky because it was the cheapest grad school out there. She taught at Old Dominion U., which doesn't pay professors all that much.

His father died unexpectedly in his late '30s leaving Mrs. Hell with two kids to support.

As you know, he's been writing. It was funny his telling how he had his mother proof his first book, despite some of its content, "because she'll eventually read it, she might as well read it now when it is of help to me."

59. Thanks for the info...
I had always assumed that he came from an intellectual background, but I wondered about the financial aspect.
It's a pity he can't get royalties for a hairstyle...I would be happily sending him a check right now :) and I wouldn't be the only one.
He really was Mr Cool.

57. I'm one of those heretics who thinks that the Clash is one of the most overrated rock bands ever...
except for their forays into reggae and dub. Those are stellar. Absolutely fantastic.
I think Sandanista is their best release.
And I generally don't even much care for reggae and dub.

53. I saw them play just a month ago...
and I was a bit hesitant about going due to my antipathy toward both performers and myself attempting to relive the glory days of our youth (I'm just weird that way)
however, my fears were unfounded
they hit the stage and they were relentless
without any sad taint of that whole nostalgia thing
They were fantastic

67. Here's the thing...
Myself personally...I would love to see X get the recognition like
induction into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
I bet none of X would care one way or another...
But, I have been following them for 30 years and it would be both
a personal satisfaction for me and, also a vindication for me
from all those friends of mine in the late 70's who put me down for listening to
something not heard on AOR stations.

After all these years and all the bands X has influenced...they deserve the highest honor.

69. I agree with you completely...
they are very unique and such an idiosyncratic band.
They were never by-the-numbers "punk rock"

70. They have also kept active with their own projects
and as the thread shows and you'll recall, a lot of crossover into country/rock/abilly territory.

I almost put up a Lone Justice video but it would look lame to those who weren't there for the mix of artists/styles we saw live and pre-moshed to.

When I watched the X video and remembered seeing them live, I thought "This (and other great rock bands) is why some of us didin't give synth bands any attention." Too much good stuff that ROCKED.

I did like Psychedelic Furs though.

My faves there would be Husker Du, SLF and that Skids Valley thing was very cool

I was a Bob Mould fan and got one of his songs on local radio and who knows, beyond there, by calling up the DJ and tellin him about "If I Can't Change Your Mind"

Thanks for adding to these great offerings.

They were one of the first punk bands from there, along with the Germs, the Bags, and the Deadbeats, and my personal faves, Black Randy and the Metrosquad.

Revisiting tonight; Killing Joke must be part of why The Clash never grabbed me. Not hard enough. Weak next to this stuff.

And why the first time I heard "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on the radio in 1991, with no clue Nirvana exisited, I had to lay down on the hardwood floor between the speakers, spread out my arms and say "AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"
