1. Yikes! Do you have an aloe plant?
Probably not, but any kind of gel with lidocaine is the way to go.

7. My husband got a yucky burn a couple of years ago.
The pharmacist said to get something with lidocaine in it. Not sure if it helped or not. Sunburns suck, and you kinda have to just ride it out. My local grocery store sells aloe plant pieces in the produce section. Might not be a bad idea to pick up one if your grocery store sells it too. But, if not, I do know that you can take a pain reliever and a bath with vinegar in it. You may stink a little, but it is supposed to take the sting out.

5. I got a big bottle of Aloe Vera gel at the Dollar Store. It works great!
Solarcaine used to be a good product, too. Don't know if they still sell it, though.

10. This stuff, with a caveat:
http://www.fote.com/prod_skin_gel.html#

"Made with the most concentrated amount fresh Aloe Vera leaves on the market, this cooling gel forms a protective barrier that helps retain moisture and promote healing."

http://www.fote.com/prod_skin_gel.html#

Fruit of the Earth Aloe Gel is available in most drug stores and it's inexpensive, but...

...I got a semi-nasty burn recently while using the outdoor gas grill and, as a result...Googled first aid for that kind of burn.

Depending on the severity of the burn, putting anything on it...Bactine, Aloe, anything...can do more harm than good if you do it in the first 24 hours.

Again, that depends on the kind of burn and its severity...but while I agree with the Aloe, I'd also encourage a brief "wait and see" period before applying anything.

Bombed for 4-5 days until it passes.

edit to add: you can also put vinegar in a spray bottle and spritz it on your skin throughout the day. Again, let it air dry.

good luck.

and you smell like burnt salad.

eta: get 100% aloe vera gel like Fruit of the Earth brand, not a cream with some aloe in it.

9. witch hazel all over the burned parts...
NOW...

you can get it at the grocery or walmart or whatever....it's by the alcohol sometimes. get the cheap stuff.
Thayers makes an no alcohol version, but it can be hard to find sometimes. The stuff in first aid sections will work just fine.

I always just slop/splash it on...or lightly use a cotton swab...sometimes that hurts or takes too long.

and after that dries in a few minutes...I use 100% aloe vera gel. Don't be stingy with it. Let it dry, and then wear some kind of light cotton item so that it won't irritate the skin.
And then to that routine in the morning again after your shower/bath.

I hadn't been out in the sun for a long time, but I took some medication in May and in June it helped promote a really BAD sunburn.
That remedy works for me -- every time.

I didn't even peel. But you have to get to it now, or it won't save your skin.

Works for me, at least. IMO.

12. Noczema is very cooling.
Don't know if it has any long-term benefits, but when you first put it on, it does feel really soothing.

Aloe. Take it straight from the plant if you can.

Drink a LOT of water. Make sure to stay super-hydrated while you're healing. As they say at Burning Man, "piss clear!"

15. Aloe. As close to the raw organic stuff as you can get.
Edited on Sat Jul-11-09 07:42 AM by BlueIris
I've used aloe on the last couple of sunburns as well as the last real burn I incurred (fell asleep on a heating pad), and it worked wonders (especially for scar reduction WRT actual burn; I don't have any scars from that as far as I can tell).

17. Aloe vera. You can get it in a spray can now.
I suggest the spray can because you don't have to rub it on - rubbing can be quite unpleasant, even with a healing salve like aloe vera.

Good luck. I'd hug you but it would probably hurt.
